Summary of 2003 Handbook Changes

April 24 —

We have expanded the section on the conversion policies available for family members under Option C-Family. The conversion policies do not include "family" policies similar to the FEGLI Program's Option C. The individual policy is issued to the eligible family member. A conversion policy cannot be issued for a family member who did not exist on the effective date of the conversion policy. A conversion policy cannot be issued for a family member added after the effective date of the policy but before the time limit for applying expires.

March 19 —

We are amending the procedure when a employee is not eligible to continue life insurance coverage into retirement. Previously, the agency would give the employee both copies of the SF 2821 and keep all other life insurance forms in the employee's OPF. Now agencies should send all life insurance forms to OPM with the retirement papers. This way OPM will have easy access to these forms if any questions arise in the future concerning the individual's FEGLI coverage.

March 13 —

We have amended the time frame for Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) benefits under the FEGLI Program. Accidental Death benefits will be payable if the employee dies within one year of the accident. Accidental Dismemberment will be paid for the loss of a hand, foot or eyesight within one year of the accident.
