AFSC Internships:  2008

Project Title: Distribution of female Pacific cod during non-spawning stage

Program: Fisheries Interaction Team (FIT) - REFM

Specific Time Frame: Summer 2008.

Location: Alaska Fisheries Science Center in Seattle, Washington

Project Description: The Pacific cod maturity project will provide important information about the spawning patterns of Pacific cod in Alaskan waters. Pacific cod are single-batch spawners and, in the Bering Sea, form large spawning aggregations along the Aleutian Islands and the shelf break between 100 to 200 meters.

This project’s focus will be to provide information to determine the occurrence and distribution of non-spawning adult (resting stage) female cod during spawning season. Resting stage ovaries identified during the spawning season have been used as a means of evaluating habitat (A.V. Tyler, 1995).

The intern’s duties will include working with scientists in the Fisheries Interaction Team, entering and verifying data collected by at-sea observers and to assist scientists in analyzing these data. The intern will also be required to search the literature for relevant materials, use geographical information systems software to construct maps, compare percentages of resting stages observed at various spawning locations. Additional work may include a microscopic comparison of resting stage specimens and linking oceanographic data to maturity data.

The intern will also produce a report and a PowerPoint presentation.

Field Work Description: There is the potential for field work aboard the NOAA Research cruises.

Qualifications Required: Functional with Excel and data entry/validation, interest or experience in working with ArcMap Geographic Information Systems Software.

Benefits to Student: The Intern will gain knowledge and skills in project development, Pacific cod maturity, and ArcMap.
