AFSC Internships:  Past Intern Experiences

Each year successful candidates get several weeks of hands-on experience in the NOAA Fisheries workplace, ranging from data entry to laboratory and field research.

Learn about some of their experiences through the links below:

2007 Interns:

Robyn Takamine

Robyn Takamine (graduate from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon) spent her summer working with the Egg and Larval Taxonomy Group (RACE - Recruitment Process Program). She identified eggs, larvae and juvenile fish using meristics, morphometrics, and pigmentation. Robyn earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology.  More -

Madeleine Lee

Madeleine Lee (senior at Grinnell College in Iowa) worked during the summer for the Systemic Management Studies Program (NMML) on various program related processes and focused on the sustainable production of estrogenic compounds.  More -

Christine Ford

Christine Ford (continuing education student at the Kodiak College in Kodiak, AK) enrolled in the Kodiak College Internship in the Biological Sciences and did her spring internship at the AFSC Kodiak Laboratory - RACE Shellfish Assessment Program for four months assisting with golden king crab researchMore - (.pdf, 85KB).

Chantel Wetzel

Chantel Wetzel (University of Washington senior) spent her internship studying the distribution of juvenile Atka mackerel and creating data on various species during a groundfish survey cruise in the Gulf of Alaska.  More -

Gretchen Thuesen

Gretchen Thuesen (University of Washington senior) spent two months with NMML's California Current Ecosystems Program studying California sea lions and northern fur seals at San Miguel Island, CA. The work involved collecting data for ongoing databases.  More -

Erin Seale

Erin Seale (graduate from California State University, Fullerton) worked with the Fisheries Behavioral Ecology Program on Pacific cod vertical behaviors in response to light, temperature and body size. Erin majored in biological sciences with emphasis in marine ecology.  More -

Josh Olson
Conor Rogan

Josh Olson (top), Conor Rogan (bottom), and Brandon Henderson (not pictured) (students in the Marine Science and Technology class at the Kodiak High School, Kodiak, AK) assisted for five months in the daily care of animals being held in the AFSC Kodiak Laboratory - RACE Shellfish Assessment Program wet lab. Their duties included cutting feed, feeding animals, cleaning tanks, monitoring water quality, and general lab cleaning. The three students assisted with other research as time permitted and participated in a one-day job shadow with Pete Cummiskey, Kodiak Laboratory Dive Master, in his dive maintenance duties, which included: tank inspections, air testing, and cylinder filling.

Liana Allen

Liana Allen (an online course student majoring in molecular biology) volunteered twice a week for four months during the spring of 2007 at the AFSC Kodiak Laboratory with the RACE Shellfish Assessment Program as a non-student volunteer. She assisted with the golden king crab research, primarily with the project's embryology and hatch timing.

Sonia Fang

Sonia Fang (senior at Pomona College in Claremont, CA) revisited the REFM Age & Growth Lab in July and August 2007 as an intern ageing lantern fish and Antarctic silverfish, species which are large components of the Antarctic ecosystem. The silverfish especially has proved difficult to age. Sonia also helped create a poster of this work entitled: "The Impact of Sea-ice on the Recruitment of Antarctic Fish"  (.pdf, 1.08MB).

2006 Interns:

Jassalyn Bradbury

Jassalyn Bradbury (Southern Oregon University graduate) assisted with golden king crab cultivation, juvenile diet, embryonic development, and hatching studies at the AFSC Kodiak LaboratoryMore -

Tabitha Hughes

Tabitha Hughes (student at Kodiak College in Alaska) completed an internship at the AFSC Kodiak Laboratory which involved using photomicroscopy and image analysis methods to study embryonic development in golden king crab.  More -

Sonia Fang

Sonia Fang (student at Pomona College in Claremont, CA) studied the age of spawning grunion during her internship with the REFM Age & Growth Program. Her work is summarized in a poster entitled "How old are spawning grunion (Leuresthes tenuis)?"  (.pdf, 70KB).

Sam Galle

Sam Galle (NOAA Hollings Scholar from University of California, Santa Barbara) recently finished a summer internship with RACE groundfish scientist Lyle Britt investigating how flatfish locate, track, and capture prey.  More -

Cara worked with RACE groundfish scientist Stan Kotwicki on the design and development of a new Oracle database for storage of light intensity data collected during RACE groundfish surveys.  More -

2005 Interns:

Abrar Ahmed

Abrar Ahmed (senior at Mohammed Ali Jinnah University in Islamabad, Pakistan) spent his summer working for the AFSC's Molecular Ecology Research Lab. Abrar's work included helping in research projects, DNA extraction, and participation in a Gulf of Alaska research survey.  More -

Amanda Koltz

Amanda Koltz worked with scientists from the Midwater Assessment and Conservation Engineering (MACE) Program in conducting acoustic surveys and fish behavioral studies.  Amanda relates her summer internship through her web pages.  More -

Jen Sloth

Jen Sloth (Western Washington University student) tells of her experience while working at San Miguel Island, CA. where she participated with the National Marine Mammal Laboratory in collecting data on California sea lions and northern fur seals for use in various databases.  More -

John Hill
