About OCE
Career Opportunities

USDA’s Office of the Chief Economist (OCE) advises the Secretary of Agriculture on the economic implications of policies and programs affecting the U.S. food supply and America’s rural communities. OCE has a relatively small staff of 50 people that includes World Agricultural Outlook Board, Global Change Program Office, Office of Energy Policy and New Uses, Office of Risk Assessment and Cost-Benefit Analysis, Agricultural Labor Affairs Coordinator, and Sustainable Development Director. Director and administrative staff positions; and economic analyst, meteorologist, and advanced computer specialist jobs are filled only in the Washington, D.C. office when available and announced through USDA’s Human Resources office.
As the focal point for economic intelligence and the outlook for U.S. and world agriculture, OCE: provides analytical support to the Secretary and USDA administrators on economic issues affecting agriculture; coordinates review and approval of the monthly World Agricultural and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report; assesses global impacts of weather on crops and livestock and coordinates USDA’s remote sensing activities;
plans and coordinates USDA’s annual Agricultural Outlook Forum.

OCE offers opportunities for advancement under a merit promotion program where each employee's ability is evaluated against knowledge and skills needed in jobs to be filled. Qualified applicants will be considered for appointment without regard to race, color, sex, age, national origin, physical or mental disability, religion, membership or non-membership in an employee organization. These same equal opportunity principles apply to career advancement following appointment.

When positions become available, applicants may fill out the Federal Employment Application following the appropriate instructions.
