Pacific Coral Reef Fishery Management Workshops
Companion coral reef fishery management workshops to the Caribbean regional workshop in 2002 were held in the fall of 2003. NOAA sponsored two workshops in the Pacific Islands. One was held in Guam during Oct. 2003 and the other was in Hawaii on the island of Oahu during Nov. 2003. A follow-on workshop to the regional workshop in Guam was held in American Samoa in March 2005.
Pacific Coral Reef Fishery Management Workshop
The Pacific Coral Reef Fishery Management Workshop was held in Guam on October 8 and 9, 2003. The workshop was sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service and was held under the auspices of the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force. The workshop was developed by a steering committee comprised of Federal and Territorial coral reef managers from American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), and Guam, in response to the U.S. All Islands Coral Reef Management Initiative.
Over 125 State, Territorial, Commonwealth, and Federal managers, fishermen, academics, students, representatives from non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders participated in workshop discussions and breakout sessions. Recurring themes throughout these breakout discussions included the need for:
- Increasing stakeholder participation in the decision process;
- Increasing outreach to the fishing community at large including research findings, management actions, and education material; and
- Building partnerships with the communities.

Hawaii Coral Reef Fishery Management Workshop
The Hawaii Coral Reef Fishery Management Workshop met at Koolau, Kaneohe on November 6 and 7, 2003. The workshop was sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service and was held under the auspices of the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force. The workshop responded to the U.S. All Islands Coral Reef Management Initiative and was developed by a steering committee comprised of Federal, State, and non-governmental coral reef managers. Reoccurring themes through out workshop discussions included the need for:
- Increasing stakeholder participation in the decision process and improving upon communication;
- Improving enforcement through effectively enforcing current regulations and community involvement; and
Integrating fishery management activities with land-based sources of pollution.

American Samoa Community-based Coral Reef Fisheries Workshop
The
NOAA Coral Reef Conservation program supported the American Samoa
Community Fisheries Workshop, organized by the American Samoa
government in partnership with local NOAA staff. The workshop
provided a forum for public input on what should be done to manage
coastal fisheries. Three public meetings were held in three different
villages around the island of Tutuila. where local an Western Samoa experts presented on the status of fisheries in local waters and management initiatives followed by periods of public participation and comment.
