Business Situation: Advance Estimates for the Fourth Quarter of 2002
The irregular pattern of U.S. economic growth continued in the fourth
quarter of 2002: Real GDP increased 0.7 percent after increases of 4.0
percent in the third quarter, 1.3 percent in the second quarter, and 5.0
percent in the first quarter. The fourth-quarter deceleration reflected
a slowdown in consumer spending and downturns in inventory investment
and exports. U.S. inflation stepped up but remained in the moderate range:
The price index for gross domestic purchases increased 1.8 percent after
increasing 1.2 percent in the third quarter.
