Blair Greimann Selected Engineer of the Year

Dr. Blair Greimann has been selected as the Bureau of Reclamation’s Engineer of the Year, as well as TSC Engineer of the Year. Blair has worked in the Sedimentation and River Hydraulics Group (86-68240) for more than 8 years addressing sediment concerns and improving Reclamation’s capability to solve these problems. Before coming to Reclamation, Blair received an international award for his sediment research.

Blair is the lead hydraulic engineer for Reclamation on the Matilija Dam Ecosystem Restoration Project in Ventura County, California, which will improve the endangered steelhead trout populations and restore a natural sediment transport regime to the Ventura River. The project is led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District, and the feasibility phase of this project won the Army Corps of Engineers 2004 Nationwide Outstanding Planning Achievement Award. Blair has developed, applied, and published new methods to predict the movement of sediment following dam removal. He has also helped to develop a sediment transport model that has been used on the Rio Grande, the Sacramento River, the Trinity River, and several other rivers to address endangered species, habitat, and flooding concerns. He has taught several short courses on the use of this model.

Blair is currently leading the development of a unique modeling framework that will simulate both river movement and cottonwood growth on the Sacramento River. This work will help develop new water management strategies in the Central Valley of California that will improve habitat along the river and allow for increased flexibility in water deliveries to Southern California.
