The Middle James Watershed 8-Digit Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC) sub-basin is
2,292,100 acres in East Central South Dakota. The watershed is located in the
counties of Brown, Day, Clark, Spink, Hand, Beadle, Kingsbury, Miner, Sanborn,
and Jerauld.
The sub-basin is over 95 percent privately owned. The dominant land use is
cropland consisting of over 1,282,400 acres or 55 percent of the watershed.
Cropland is primarily used to produce corn, soybeans, and wheat, but also
produces significant amounts of sunflowers, oats, and sorghum. Alfalfa and
grass hay are also produced and included in crop rotations. Other dominant land
uses include pastureland at 7 percent and rangeland, 24 percent. Beef cattle
production is the primary use on pasture and rangeland and contributes greatly
to local communities.

CSP Sign-up and Application Process

The CSP sign-up will be conducted in the Middle James watershed for a six week period
beginning April 18 until May 16, 2008.
The sign-up process is different from other USDA conservation programs.
Participants are required to conduct a self-assessment to determine on their own
whether or not they are likely eligible for the program. The workbook also
provides additional guidance and documents necessary in completing an
application.

CSP Payments
South Dakota CSP Cost Lists - The 2008 CSP sign-up will
offer opportunities to receive three types of funding. Potential payments
include stewardship, existing practice, and enhancement payments.

CSP Existing Practice Component for South Dakota
The existing Practice Payment is = to 25% of the Stewardship Payment
Example: If a contract's annual Stewardship Payment is $1,000, the
contract will have an existing Practice Payment of $250.
