Awards

Welcome to the American Library Association's Awards area. Each year, the ALA and its member units seek to honor, through its Awards Program, those who have rendered distinguished service to libraries and librarianship.


ALA General

Beta Phi Mu Award
An annual award consisting of $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation of achievement to a library school faculty member or to an individual for distinguished service to education for librarianship. The nominations must be accompanied by a specific statement of qualifications of the nominee. Supporting evidence or testimonials are welcome. Donated by the Beta Phi Mu International Library Science Honorary Society. Deadline is December 1.

Cavendish Award
An annual award consisting of $2,000 and a citation of achievement recognizes either a school or public library which demonstrates excellence in library programming by providing programs which have community impact and respond to community needs. Advocacy, partnerships and creativity of use of resources, regardless of the size of the library, will be taken into consideration. Donated by Marshall Cavendish Corporation. Deadline is December 1.

Dewey Medal
An annual award consisting of a bronzed medal and a 24k gold-framed citation of achievement for recent creative leadership of high order, particularly in those fields in which Melvil Dewey was actively interested: library management, library training, cataloging and classification, and the tools and techniques of librarianship. Donated by OCLC/Forest Press, Inc. Deadline is December 1.

EBSCO Sponsorship
This annual award consisting of $1,000 for actual reimbursed expenses is designed to allow librarians to attend the ALA's Annual Conference. Donated by EBSCO Subscription Services. Deadline is December 1.

Equality Award
An annual award consisting of $500 and a 24k gold-framed citation of achievement given to an individual or group for outstanding contribution toward promoting equality in the library profession. The contribution may be either a sustained one or a single outstanding accomplishment. The award may be given for an activist or scholarly contribution in such areas as pay equity, affirmative action, legislative work and non-sexist education. Donated by Scarecrow Press, Inc., a member of the Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group. Deadline is December 1.

Futas Award
A bi-annual award consisting of $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation of achievement recognizing and honoring a librarian who invests time and talent to make positive changes in the profession of librarianship. The award is funded by contributions to the Elizabeth Futas Memorial Fund at the American Library Association. Deadline is December 1, 2009.

Gale Cengage Learning Financial Development Award
An annual award consisting of $2,500 and a 24k gold-framed citation presented to a library organization that exhibited meritorious achievement in carrying out a library financial development project to secure new funding resources for a public or academic library entity. Donated by Gale Cengage Learning. Deadline is December 1.

Haycock Award
An annual award consisting of $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation of achievement honoring an individual for contributing significantly to the public recognition and appreciation of librarianship through professional performance, teaching, and/or writing. Donated by Ken Haycock. Deadline is December 1.

Howard Award
A bi-annual award consisting of $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation of achievement honoring a librarian, library board, library group, or an individual who has exhibited unusual courage for the benefit of library programs or services. Deadline is December 1, 2008.

Library of the Future Award
An annual award consisting of $1,500 and a 24k gold-framed citation of achievement to honor an individual library, library consortium, group of librarians, or support organization for innovative planning for, applications of, or development of patron training programs about information technology in a library setting. Donated by Information Today, Inc. Deadline is December 1.

Lippincott Award
An annual award consisting of $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation presented annually to a librarian for distinguished service to the profession of librarianship, such service to include outstanding participation in the activities of the professional library association, notable published professional writing, or other significant activity on behalf of the profession and its aims. Founded by the late Joseph W. Lippincott and now donated by his grandson, Joseph W. Lippincott, III. Deadline is December 1.

Schneider Family Book Award
The Schneider Family Book Awards honor an author or illustrator for a book that embodies an artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences. Three annual awards each consisting of $5000 and a framed plaque, will be given annually in each of the following categories: birth through grade school (age 0-8), middle school (age 9-13) and teens (age 14-18). (Age groupings are approximations). The book must emphasize the artistic expression of the disability experience for children and or adolescent audiences. The book must portray some aspect of living with a disability or that of a friend or family member, whether the disability is physical, mental or emotional. The nominated novel (fiction or non-fiction), biogaphy and/or picture book must be published during the past two(2) years. Donated by Dr. Katherine Schneider. Deadline is December 1.

Scholastic Library Publishing Award (Formerly Grolier Award)
An annual award consisting of $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation presented to a librarian whose "unusual contribution to the stimulation and guidance of reading by children and young people" exemplifies outstanding achievement in the profession. (Donated by Scholastic Library Publishing.) Deadline is December 1.

SIRSI GRANT
SIRSI’s Leader In Library Technology Grant has been discontinued.

Sullivan Award
An annual award consisting of a commemorative gift and a 24k gold-framed citation presented to an individual who has shown exceptional understanding and support of public library service to children while having general management/supervisory/ administrative responsibility that has included public library service to children in its scope. Donated by Peggy Sullivan Deadline is December 1.

W.Y. Boyd Literary Award
An annual award consisting of $5,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation of achievement honoring the best fiction set in a period when the United States was at war. It recognizes the service of American veterans and military personnel and encourages the writing and publishing of outstanding war-related fiction for young adults or adults. Donated by William Young Boyd II. Deadline is December 1.

Wilson Grant
An annual award consisting of $3,500 and a 24k gold-framed citation given to a library organization whose application demonstrates greatest merit for a program of staff development designed to further the goals and objectives of the library organization. Donated by the H.W. Wilson Company. Deadline is December 1.

World Book Award
Two annual awards consisting of $5,000 and a gold-framed citation of achievement to a public and school library. The World Book/ALA Information Literacy Goal Award seeks to promote exemplary information literacy programs in public and school libraries. The annual awards are designed to encourage and support innovative and effective information literacy programs in today’s school and public libraries. Deadline is December 1.

AASL Collaborative School Library Media Award
The $2,500 award, sponsored by Sagebrush Corporation, recognizes and hopes to encourage collaboration and partnerships between school library media specialists and teachers in meeting educational goals outlined in Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning.

AASL Distinguished School Administrators Award
The $2,000 award, donated by SIRS Mandarin, is given to a school administrator for developing an exemplary school library media program and making an outstanding and sustained contribution to advancing the role of the school library media center.

AASL Distinguished Service Award
The $3,000 award, donated by Baker & Taylor, recognizes a librarian who has made an outstanding contribution to school librarianship and school library development.

AASL Frances Henne Award
The $1,250 award, sponsored by the Greenwood Publishing Group, is given to a school library media specialist with five or fewer years in the profession to attend an AASL conference or ALA Annual Conference for the first time.

AASL Information Technology Pathfinder Award
The award, donated by the Follett Software Company, recognizes library media specialists for innovative approaches to information technology in the school library media center. The award, $1,000 to the school library media specialist and $500 to the library, is given in two categories--elementary (K-6) and secondary (7-12).

AASL Intellectual Freedom Award
The award, $2,000 to the recipient and $1,000 to the media center of the recipient's choice donated by SIRS Mandarin, recognizes a personal member of AASL who has upheld the principles of intellectual freedom.

AASL National School Library Media Program of the Year Award
The award, $10,000 ($30,000 total) in two categories donated by Follett Library Resources, recognizes 1 school district and 2 single schools for exemplary school library media programs that are fully integrated into the school's curriculum. The deadline for the 2006 award is January 2, 2006.

AASL President's Crystal Apple
The Crystal Apple is given at the discretion of the AASL President to an individual or group who has had significant impact on school libraries and students.

AASL/Highsmith Research Grant
The grant, up to $5,000 donated by Highsmith Inc., is awarded to conduct innovative research aimed at measuring and evaluating the impact of school library media programs on learning and education.

ABC-CLIO Leadership Grant
The grant, up to $1,750 donated by ABC-CLIO, is given to school library media associations that are AASL affiliates for planning and implementing leadership programs at the state, regional, or local levels.

ACRL EBSS Award
This award honors a distinguished academic librarian who has made an outstanding contribution as an education and/or behavioral sciences librarian through accomplishments and service to the profession.

ACRL Librarian of the Year Award
The ACRL Academic/Research Librarian of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding member of the library profession who has made a significant national or international contribution to academic or research librarianship and library development.

Advancement of Literacy Award
The Advancement of Literacy Award honors a publisher, bookseller, hardware and/or software dealer, foundation or similar group (i.e., not an individual) that has made a significant contribution to the advancement of adult literacy. A plaque is awarded annually at the ALA Annual Conference. Established in 1984. Sponsored by Library Journal.

Allie Beth Martin Award
PLA's Allie Beth Martin Award honors a librarian who, in a public library setting, has demonstrated extraordinary range and depth of knowledge about books or other library materials and has distinguished ability to share that knowledge. A plaque and a $3,000 honorarium are presented annually at the ALA Annual Conference. Established in 1977 in honor of Allie Beth Martin. Sponsored by Baker & Taylor.

ALTA Literacy Award Nomination Form
The ALTA Literacy Award is a plaque presented annually to a library trustee or volunteer who has made a significant contribution to addressing the literacy problem in the United States.

ALTA Major Benefactors Honor Award Nomination Form
The ALTA Major Benefactors Award is a citation presented to an individual, corporation, or family for major benefaction by the ALTA Division.

ALTA Trustee Citation Nomination Form
The ALTA Trustee Citation award is awarded by the American Library Association and the ALTA Division. It is presented during the Opening General Session at the ALA Annual Conference, and honors the best contributions and efforts of citizens who sit on library boards.

ALTA/GALE Outstanding Trustee Conference Grant application form
The ALTA/Gale Outstanding Trustee Conference Grant enables public library trustees to attend the ALA Annual Conference. A grant of $750 each is warded annually to two public library trustees who have demonstrated qualitative interests and efforts in supportive service of the local public library.

Arbuthnot Honor Lecture Award
An annual lecture, delivered by an individual chosen by ALSC, who has made significant contributions to the field of children's literature. Institutions apply to host the lecture. Administered by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC). Deadline for host applications is May 1.

ASCLA Exceptional Service Award
A citation presented to recognize exceptional service to patients, to the homebound, to medical, nursing, and other professional staff in hospitals, and to inmates, as well as to recognize professional leadership, effective interpretation of programs, pioneering activity, and significant research of experimental projects. Deadline for nominations: December 15.

ASCLA Leadership Achievement Award
A citation presented to recognize leadership and achievement in the following areas of activity: consulting, multitype library cooperation, and state library development. Deadline for nominations: December 15.

ASCLA Professional Achievement Award
A citation presented to one or more ASCLA members for professional achievement within the areas of consulting, networking, statewide service and programs. Deadline for nominations: December 15.

ASCLA/KLAS/NOD Award
A $1,000 award and certificate for a library organization that has provided services for people with disabilities. Cosponsored by ASCLA, Keystone Systems, and the National Organization on Disability (NOD). Deadline for nominations: December 15.

Atkinson Memorial Award
This award honors the life and accomplishments of Hugh C. Atkinson, one of the major innovators in modern librarianship, and recognizes outstanding achievements (including risk-taking) by academic librarians that have contributed significantly to improvements in the areas of library automation, library management, and/or library development and research.

PLA Awards

Baker and Taylor Audio Music/Video Product Award
The purpose PLA's BAKER & TAYLOR ENTERTAINMENT AUDIO MUSIC/VIDEO PRODUCT AWARD is to promote the development of a circulating audio music/video product collection in public libraries and increase the exposure of the format within the community. The grant was established in 1997 and is sponsored by Baker & Taylor.

Banks-Harris Preservation Award
Preservation award of a $1,500 grant donated by Preservation Technologies, L.P., and a citation to a professional preservation specialist who has been active in the field of preservation and/or conservaiton for library and/or archival materials.

Bessie Boehm Moore - Thorndike Press Award
The Bessie Boehm Moore–Thorndike Press Award was an annual award consisting of $1,000 and a citation of achievement, presented to a library organization that has developed an outstanding and creative program for library service to the aging, administered by the Management and Operation of User Services Section (MOUSS), Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). (Discontinued in 2003.)

Blackwell's Scholarship Award

BRASS Thomson Financial Student Travel Award
A $1,000 cash award given to a student enrolled in an ALA accredited master's degree program to attend the ALA Annual Conference and a one-year membership in the Business Reference and Services Section (BRASS) of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). The applicant should have demonstrated interest in a career as a business reference librarian, the award is administered by RUSA. Deadline for receiving submissions is December 1.

Cathleen Bourdon Service Award
A citation presented to recognize an ASCLA personal member for outstanding service and leadership to the division. Deadline for nominations: December 15.

Charlie Robinson Award
PLA's Charlie Robinson Award honors a public library director who, over a period of seven (7) years, has been a risk taker, an innovator and/or a change agent in a public library. The recipient should have been active in national and other professional associations and be known for developing and implementing programs which are responsive to the needs of community residents. The award consists of $1,000 and a gift. The public library director will be honored at the ALA Annual Conference. Established in 1997. Sponsored by the Baker & Taylor Company.

Dartmouth Medal
A medal that honors the creation of a reference work of outstanding quality and significance, presented by the Collection Development and Evaluation Section (CODES) of the Reference & User Services Association (RUSA). Deadline for receiving submissions is December 15.

Distinguished Service Award
A $1,000 award and an engraved pin for an ALSC member who has made significant contributions to, and an impact on, library service to children and/or ALSC. Administered by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC). Deadline for nominations: December 1.

Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship
This award fosters research in academic librarianship by encouraging and assisting doctoral students in the field with their dissertation research.

Dun & Bradstreet Award for Outstanding Service to Minority Business Communities
Annual award of $2,000 (up to half of which can be used to cover expense of attending ALA Annual Conference to receive award) that recognizes one librarian who, or library that has created an innovative service for a minority business community, or has been recognized by that community as an outstanding service provider, presented by the Business Reference and Services Section (BRASS) of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). Deadline for receiving submissions is December 1.

Dun & Bradstreet Public Librarian Support Award
Annual award of $1,000 to support the attendance at Annual Conference of a public librarian who has performed outstanding business reference service and who requires financial assistance to attend the ALA Annual Conference, presented by the Business Reference and Services Section (BRASS) of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). Deadline for receiving submissions is December 1.

EBSCO Awards
These two annual awards recognize significant achievement in the areas of programs and leadership.

Esther J. Piercy Award
The Esther J. Piercy Award was established by the Resources and Technical Services Division of the American Library Association in 1968 in memory of Esther J. Piercy, editor of Journal of Cataloging and Classification from 1950 to 1956 and of Library Resources & Technical Services from 1957 to 1967.

Excellence in Academic Libraries Award
This award is to recognize the accomplishments of librarians and other library staff as they come together as members of a team to support the mission of their institution.

Excellence in Small and/or Rural Public Library Service Award
PLA's Excellence in Small and/or Rural Public Library Service Award provides recognition and a $1,000 honorarium to a public library serving a population of 10,000 or less that demonstrates excellence of service to its community as exemplified by an overall service program or a special program of significant accomplishment. The award honors a public library for all or any of the following: (1)Uniqueness of service of program;(2)Impact of program or service on community; (3)How the service or program will affect the future of the library and its community

First Step Award

Francis Joseph Campbell Award
An award consisting of a citation and a medal presented to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of library service for the blind and physically handicapped. Administered by ASCLA LSSPS. Deadline for nominations: December 15.

Genealogical Publishing Company Award
A citation and $1,500 cash award to a librarian, library or publisher to encourage professional achievement in historical reference and research librarianship, presented by the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). Deadline for receiving submissions is December 15.

Highsmith Library Innovation Award
PLA's Highsmith Library Innovation Award recognizes a public library’s innovative and creative service program to the community. (As part of the evaluation process with the vendor, after three years the emphasis may change to reflect new trends and needs.) A plaque and a $2,000 honorarium are presented annually at the ALA Annual Conference. Established in 1996. Sponsored by Highsmith Inc.

Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Award
This award honors the life and accomplishments of Hugh C. Atkinson, one of the major innovators in modern librarianship, and recognizes outstanding achievements (including risk-taking) by academic librarians that have contributed significantly to improvements in the areas of library automation, library management, and/or library development and research.

Isadore Gilbert Mudge Award sponsored by the Gale Group
An annual cash award of $5,000 and a citation to an individual who has made a distinguished contribution to reference librarianship, presented by the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). Deadline for receiving submissions is December 15.

John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award
The John Cotton Dana Award, sponsored by H.W. Wilson, honors outstanding library public relations, whether a summer reading program, a year-long centennial celebration, fundraising for a new college library, an awareness campaign or an innovative partnership in the community. Winning entries from the most recent two years are available to borrow via interlibrary loan from the ALA Library.

John Sessions Memorial Award
A plaque given to a library or library system to honor significant work with the labor community and to recognize the history and contributions of the labor movement toward the development of this country, presented by the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). (Established 1980) Deadline for receiving submissions is December 15.

LAMA Cultural Diversity Grant Guidelines
The goals of the grant program are to support the creation and dissemination of resources that will assist library administrators and managers in developing a vision and commitment to diversity, and in fostering and sustaining diversity throughout their institutions; to increase the representation and advancement of people of color in the field of library administration and management and to establish productive partnerships between LAMA and major national organizations representing minority interests; to strengthen the diversity of LAMA membership, committees, and officers and integrate diversity into all aspects of the Association's work.

LAMA/YBP Student Writing and Development Award Guidelines
The LAMA/YBP Student Writing and Development Award is given to honor the best article on a topic in the area of library administration and management written by a student enrolled in a library and information studies graduate program. The purpose of this award is to enhance the professional development of students of library and information studies through publication of the winning article in Library Administration & Management, the LAMA magazine, and enabling the award recipient to attend the ALA Annual Conference.

LBI George Cunha and Susan Swartzburg Award
Honors the memory of George Cunha and Susan Swartzburg, early leaders in cooperative preservation programming and strong advocates for collaboration in the field of preservation.

Leab Awards
These awards, funded by an endowment established by Katharine Kyes Leab and Daniel J. Leab, editors of American Book Prices Current, recognize outstanding exhibition catalogues issued by American or Canadian institutions in conjunction with library exhibitions as well as electronic exhibition catalogues of outstanding merit issued within the digital/web environment.

Leadership in Library Acquisitions Award
This award of $1,500, donated by Harrassowitz Company, is given to recognize the contributions by and outstanding leadership of an individual to the field of acquisitions librarianship. This recognition is made for individual achievement of a high order in this area.

LITA Scholarships & Awards
LITA scholarships are awarded to eligible students who are continuing their education in an MLS program. The awards recognizes outstanding achievements by individual or a group of individuals

Louis Shores - Greenwood Publishing Group Award
A citation and $3,000 cash award to an individual reviewer, group, editor, review medium or organization to recognize excellence in book reviewing and other media for libraries. The award recipient is selected for significant achievement related to a reviewing process that helps librarians make selection decisions, administered by the Collection Development and Evaluation Section (CODES) of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). Deadline for receiving submissions is December 15.

Margaret E. Monroe Library Adult Services Award
A citation to honor a librarian who has made significant contributions to library adult services, administered by the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). Deadline for receiving submissions is December 15.

Margaret Mann Citation
The Margaret Mann Citation is awarded for outstanding professional achievement in cataloging or classification.

Marta Lange CQ Award
This annual award recognizes an academic or law librarian who, through research, service to the profession, or other creative activity, makes distinguished contributions to bibliography and information service in law or political science. This award honors Marta Lange, 1990-91 Law and Political Science Sections (LPSS) Chair, whose exceptional talents as a leader were enhanced by a wonderful collegial spirit.

Nijhoff Study Grant
This grant supports research pertaining to Western European studies, librarianship, or the book trade.

Notable Books for Adults
Since 1944, the goal of the Notable Books Council, of the CODES Section the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) has been to make available to the nation’s readers a list of approximately 25 very good, very readable, and at times very important fiction, nonfiction, and poetry books for the adult reader.

Oberly Award
The Oberly Award was established in 1923 in memory of Eunice Rockwood Oberly. This biennial award is given in odd-numbered years for the best English-language bibliography in the field of agriculture or a related science.

Outstanding Reference Sources
Annual recommendations of distinguished reference works selected by experienced librarians of the Oustanding References Committee, CODES Section of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA).

Reference Service Press Award
A plaque and $2,500 cash award presented to recognize the most outstanding article published in RUSQ (previously RQ) during the preceding two-volume year, presented by the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). Deadline for receiving submissions is December 15.

Samuel Lazerow Fellowship
This award fosters advances in collections or technical services by providing fellowships to librarians for travel or writing in those fields. Research projects in the compilation of bibliographies will not be supported by this fellowship.

Thomson Gale Award for Excellence in Business Librarianship
The Thomson Gale Award for Excellence in Business Librarianship is a citation and $3,000 cash award to an individual who has made a significant contribution to business librarianship, is administered by Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). Deadline for receiving submissions is December 15.

Thomson Gale Award for Excellence in Reference and Adult Library Services
The Thomson Gale Award for Excellence in Reference and Adult Library Services is a citation and $3,000 cash award given to a library or library system for developing an imaginative and unique resource to meet patrons' reference needs, administered by Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). Deadline for receiving submissions is December 15.

Ulrich's Serials Librarianship Award
Presented by the ALCTS Serials Section, the award consists of a citation and $1,500 donated by Ulrich. The awards are given for distinguished contributions to serials librarianship, including such activities as leadership in serials-related activities through participation in professional associations and/or library education programs; contributions to the body of serials literature; conduct of research in the area of serials; development of tools or methods to enhance access to or management of serials; and other advances leading to a better understanding of the field of serials.

Virginia Boucher - OCLC Distinguished ILL Librarian Award
The Virginia Boucher–OCLC Distinguished ILL (Interlibrary Loan) Librarian Award is an annual award consisting of $2,000 and a citation recognizing a librarian for outstanding professional achievement, leadership, and contributions to interlibrary loan and document delivery through publication, during the previous two years, of significant professional literature, participation in professional associations, and/or innovative approaches to practice in individual libraries that is administered by Sharing and Transforming Access to Resources Section (STARS)of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). Deadline for receiving submissions is December 15.

WSS Achievement Awards
The Women’s Studies Section awards are given annually to honor distinguished academic librarians who have made outstanding contributions to women’s studies through accomplishments and service to the profession.

YALSA Awards & Grants
THE YOUNG ADULT LIBRARY SERVICES ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $33,000 AVAILABLE FROM YALSA AWARDS

2007 Scholastic Library Publishing National Library Week Grant
The 2007 Scholastic Library Publishing National Library Week Grant will award $5000 to a single library of any type for the best public awareness campaign during National Library Week 2007. All proposals must use the "Come together @ your library®" theme.

AWARDS, GRANTS and Exchanges

Baber (Carroll Preston) Research Grant
The Carroll Preston Baber Research Grant is given annually to one or more librarians or library educators who will conduct innovative research that could lead to an improvement in services to any specified group(s) of people. The project should aim to answer a question that is of vital importance to the library community and the researchers should plan to provide documentation of the results of their work.

Dain (Phyllis) Library History Dissertation Award
The Phyllis Dain Library History Dissertation Award, named in honor of a library historian widely known as a supportive advisor and mentor as well as a rigorous scholar and thinker, recognizes outstanding dissertations in the general area of library history. $500 and a certificate are given for a work that embodies original research on a significant topic relating to the history of books, libraries, librarianship or information science.

Davis (Donald G.) Article Award
The Donald G. Davis Article Award is presented every second year to recognize the best article written in English in the field of United States and Canadian library history including the history of libraries, librarianship, and book culture.

Diversity Research Grants
The Diversity Research Grant consists of a one-time $2000 annual award for original research and a $500 travel grant to attend and present at ALA Annual Conference. Three grants are awarded each year, the deadline to submit is April 15th.

Jackie Eubanks Memorial Award
The Jackie Eubanks Memorial Award honors the late Jackie Eubanks, former AIP Task Force member and vigorous champion of alternative views in library collections. The award recognizes outstanding achievement in promoting the acquisition and use of alternative materials in libraries.

Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award for Exemplary Humanities Programming
The Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award is an annual award to a school library that has conducted an exemplary program or program series in the humanities during the prior school year. It consists of (1) a $4,000 cash award, (2) a plaque and (3) the promotion of the winner as a model program at a training opportunity for other school libraries.

Shera (Jesse H.) Award for Distinguished Published Research
Jesse H. Shera Award for Distinguished Published Research is given for a research articles published in English during the calendar year, nominated by any member of LRRT or by the editors of research journals in the field of library and information studies.

Shera (Jesse H.) Award for the Support of Dissertation Research
The Jesse H Shera Award for the Support of Dissertation Research is given to provide recognition and monetary support for dissertation research employing exemplary research design and methods.

Winsor (Justin) Prize for Library Essay
Justin Winsor Prize for Library History Essay, named in honor of the distinguished 19th century librarian, historian, and bibliographer who was also ALA's first president, consists of a $500 cash award. It includes an invitation to have the winner's paper considered for publication in Libraries and Culture.


Round Tables

2003 Marshall Cavendish Award
The NMRT Exhibitor Contact and Relations Committee is sponsoring the Marshall Cavendish Essay Contest. Winners will receive tickets to the Newbery Caldecott Wilder Banquet at ALA in Toronto.

Coretta Scott King Book Award
The Coretta Scott King Award is presented annually by the Coretta Scott King Task Force of the American Library Association's Ethnic Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT). Recipients are authors and illustrators of African descent whose distinguished books promote an understanding and appreciation of the "American Dream."

Immroth
The John Phillip Immroth Memorial Award honors intellectual freedom fighters in and outside the library profession who have demonstrated remarkable personal courage in resisting censorship. The award consists of $500 and a citation. Individuals, a group of individuals or an organization are eligible for the award.

Oboler
The Eli M. Oboler Memorial Award, which consists of $500 and a certificate, is presented for the best published work in the area of intellectual freedom.

Shirley Olofson Current Winner
Presents information about the 2002 winner of the Shirley Olofson Award.

SIRS
The ProQuest/SIRS State and Regional Intellectual Freedom Achievement Award (sponsored by the Intellectual Freedom Round Table) is given to the most innovative and effective intellectual freedom project covering a state or region. Programs may be one-time, one-year or ongoing/multi-year efforts. The award consists of a citation and $1,000 donated by ProQuest.

Stonewall Book Awards
Stonewall Book Award-Barbara Gittings Literature Award and the Stonewall Book Award-Israel Fishman Non-Fiction Award are presented to English language works published the year prior to the announcement date. The award, which consists of a commemorative plaque and a cash stipend, is announced in January and presented to the winning authors or editors at the American Library Association Annual Conference in June.
