Brief Description:	Samuel Johnson once said, "Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information upon it." Where the Student Emergency Response Team is concerned, I know the subject, but others have nowhere to get information on it. This is why I did my senior project on getting the information out into the public, and I wish to give you some information on the team as well. The team started by having too much time to teach very little material in the Grants Pass High School Emergency Care class. It is a semester class that, until a year ago, taught only Adult/ Infant CPR and First Aid. Due to the lack of material, Jeannie Kinyon thought up a plan to teach Search and Rescue Techniques. Of course it would have to be approved by the board of directors and administrators. She got the okay and then contacted the emergency technicians in our community. They told her about how they train the Community Emergency Response Teams, and who to contact. She then got the material for the students to study, and ask for help from the EMT's and also the fire department personnel. Our city administrator, Al Rhodes, also was a great help in getting the team started. Once she had the material, being able to teach emergency care was nothing new to her. She let the EMT's and fire department help her teach the students anything she wasn't familiar with. In my class, (the guinea pigs), the community personnel came into the class room to give us tests as well as movies and presentations of past disasters they have dealt with. In a matter of five months we learned: 1. Adult CPR 2. Infant CPR 3. First Aid 4. Search and Rescue Techniques Mrs. Kinyon contacted the media and got the communities support. The city gave us hard hats and vests with our name (SERT) on them. She also got the school to finally accept the idea and to hold a crisis simulation. We called it "Earthquake 2000" and it was a great success. They set up 2 rooms in one of my high schools buildings. Our tasks were accessing the building, reporting casualties, and setting up triage before even going into the rooms with the victims in them. The other emergency care classes became the victims for our simulation, and were very cooperative. We learned about initial interview, and making our own safety the number one priority. The exercise taught us to cooperate with our team leaders and fellow members, and actually experience the rescue madness. Once the school saw what kinds of things we were being trained to do, the questions on liability started arising. These questions were simply answered by the knowledge that we are trained, and are much safer with the training then we are by just standing around in an emergency. Being a member myself for a year now, let me be the one to reassure you of how professional and dedicated we are to the jobs bestowed upon us. It is a task that the 20 members are well aware of and are ready to accomplish. This is the first team like it in the nation, and as it is, the only one. I hope to help other teams get started and see them progress into a team like I am involved in today. It is an honor to me to be apart of, and I am happy to pass on the information to you. We have 150 students go through the training to be on the team, yet only five were accepted this year. It is hard work and very tough to beat the competition. You have to be the best of the best, and only the most dedicated are able to take part in this wonderful program.

Brief Description:	CERT "basic training" is offered three times a year in eight weekly sessions of three hours each. The course is free to anyone who lives or works in Hillsboro, and we provide all training materials plus basic safety gear (hard hat, vest, goggles, work gloves). We offer follow-on training on various related topics for our graduates at least six times per year, plus a half-day full-scale exercise. We also participate in the Portland metro region's full-day, multi-jurisdictional NW Emergency Response Team Rodeos. Most of our training integrates our amateur radio (ARES/RACES) volunteers to provide team communications. Members are also encouraged to attend any of the basic training sessions as refresher. Brief Description:	Our CERT program began in 2003 and since that time over 100 people have been trained. Some have applied to become members of the Coos County Emergency Response Team, only deployed by Coos County Emergency Management. Citizens are offered 22 hours of free training which includes a review and drill. CERTs also take additional training such as flagging safety, electricity safety training, HAM Radio classes, Wildland Urban Interface for CERT training and are offered opportunities to help with setting up portable units at our hospital and also to help with flu clinics. They also participate in festivals and events such as the annual Tsunami/Earthquake Conference where we handout preparedness literature and demonstrate how to put together emergency kits. We utilize donations to purchase items to give away at the conference to help citizens put together their own family/business/school emergency kits. Brief Description:	Gresham has two ways you can get CERT trained: 1) A series of seven training sessions taught by Gresham Fire & Emergency Services specialists. These sessions are usually conducted on evenings over a 7-week period. 2) A pilot program combining web-based training with local hands-on skills training taught by our firefighter specialists. Students first complete a six-module introductory CERT training course on-line, and then attend a Saturday field training/exercise session in practical emergency skills. It takes approximately 18-20 hours to get CERT trained. Upon completion you may register as a CERT volunteer and be assigned to a team.

Brief Description:	Josephine County CERT is in place to protect 70,000 residents in Southern Oregon. The primary city is Grants Pass, with a population approching 30,000. We currently have 3 team of about 75 people in each. They are divided by rivers and other terrain features. We currently train 150 people a year in the CERT. Brief Description:	Program has been functioning for one year in a small rural fire protection district with population base of 1000 people. Currently have 26 trained volunteers, and are in advanced training program. volunteers have already been utilized as resource for fire district in several emergency situations. Program volunteers are available to be activiated for service in 12 adjoining communities and over a larger 2 county area. Overall program objective is to recruit and train volunteers to serve the immediate community as an emergency response team in times of emergency, and to provide supplimental support for the fire district fire department in mitigation of emergencies as necessary.

Brief Description:	The CERT program is offered four times a year. It consists of seven 3-hour classes that prepare people to help themselves their family, and their neighbors in the event of a catastrophic disaster. A steering committee, made up of CERT members, meet once a month to provide continuing training and to promote preparedness.

Brief Description:	The Jacksonville CERT responds to emergencies when activated within the city of Jacksonville. The Jacksnovillle CERT's goals and objectives are to complete our training and increase our numbers to achieve two CERT members for the nine zones created within the city. The next objective is to acquire a trailer to contain all of the CERT equipment. As we grow the team will create more goals and objectives all to help us serve when the need arises.

Brief Description:	First CERT Team in Clatsop County. First class graduated in April 2007 with 22 participants. Our second quarterly continuing education class is scheduled for July, 2007. We currently have a waiting list for the next class. We were activated several times since April, all three times in conjunction to a large landslide precipitated by severe storms this past winter. Our goal is to have CERT Team members in each school, care home, and other places of concentrated need. Our program is administered through the Astoria Fire Department.

Brief Description:	This is the first CERT Team in Clatsop County. The class graduated in April 2007. We currently have an enthusiastic team of 19. We are involved in community events, public education, and have been activated three times to assist the City of Astoria with landslides. Our next class to be trained will be in early 2008, with another to follow mid year. Our current team has requested bi-monthly continuing educaction. We recently certified the team in ICS 700, with ICS 100 to follow in January 2008.

Brief Description:	Brief Description: Tigard CERT program was established in 2004 by the Public Works Dept. We currently have 75+ team members in all 4 quadurants of the city. Our goals are to establish proactive teams in every neighborhood of the city. We are always looking for new team members. All we require is a desire to be prepared and to help your neighbors in a time of need, so we welcome all persons. We already have a very diverse membership ranging from retirees, to high school students, stay at home mothers, college students, state and city employees, etc. We welcome all those who live and work in the city and even those from the smaller outlying communities surrounding Tigard. We work closely with Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue as well as the cities of Beaverton and King City. Brief Description:	The Salem CERT program was established in 2002 by the Salem Fire Department. We currently have 275 trained citizens across our 19 neighborhood associations. New team members that work or live in the City of Salem are welcome to attend the annual Spring or Fall classes. Membership varies from retirees, stay at home moms, active business people and high profile City, County and State employees. Our CERT Steering Committee meets monthly and a General Meeting is held quarterly for the entire membership to provide training opportunities and specialty emergency preparedness presenters. Brief Description:	The City of Newberg offers CERT training twice each year using the FEMA outline. CERT members attend a combined 30 hour classroom/hands-on training course designed to give them the needed skills and knowledge to assist their communities in the event of a disaster. CERT teams meet quarterly and participate in local disaster exercises. Members are also encouraged to attend any of the basic training sessions as refresher. To keep members involved and motivated, we also look for ways to use CERT in community events. Enrollment is open to anyone 16 years of age and older who lives or works in the Newberg/Dundee area.
