Shalala today recognized 26 employees of the Department of Health and Human Services for their volunteer work. The Secretary's Volunteer Awards ceremony takes place during National Volunteer Week, April 18-24, and pays tribute to HHS employees who dedicate time and talent in their communities to making life better for others. Hundreds of programs are planned across the nation to mark the week, including a program by the president at the White House. Secretary Shalala called the work done by HHS volunteers "truly extraordinary" and praised them as "outstanding employees" who voluntarily find ways "in their busy lives for sharing their time and talents with others." She encouraged others to follow their example. The volunteer efforts of the 26 HHS employees ranged from fighting fires to tutoring children; from renovating homes to feeding the homeless; from bringing hope and happiness to prisoners to working with cancer patients, victims of domestic violence and others in pain to teaching judo to the vision- impaired. One founded a support group for amputees while another works in a summer camp for epileptic children. The awardees are: Vanessa P.
