Description of Duties
The incumbent will perform scientific investigations, studies, and projects which require state-of-the-art
knowledge in microbiology. This work will provide support and advice on scientific or public health issues
relative to meat, poultry and egg inspection programs. In collaboration with senior scientists, incumbent
will select, adapt and develop analytical procedures needed to obtain information required. Participates
in the Agency procedures for foodborne illness product recalls and outbreak investigations of a microbiological
nature and other related regulatory issues. Investigates applicability of new molecular genetic methodologies
for further development or implementation for the detection of emerging foodborne pathogens of concern in meat,
poultry and egg products regulated by the Agency. Prepares high quality papers and journal articles from Agency
derived data on food safety and pathogen control or detection issues. Performs statistical analysis on Agency
data, as necessary. The studies and projects completed will be used as the basis for key decisions concerning
public health matters and will contribute to the effectiveness of agency programs.
Qualification Requirements
- A doctoral degree in Microbiology or similar scientific discipline, which has a direct relation to
microbiology or food microbiology.
- Specialized knowledge or education in one or more of the following areas of this science is highly
desirable: molecular genetics of pathogenicity and pathogen detection, biochemistry, and statistical analysis
of microbiological processes.
- Direct research experience on food safety related issues pertaining to emerging foodborne pathogens
such as E. coli 0157:H7; Salmonella, Campylobacter, Yersinia, or Listeria monocytogenes. Experience in
the searching, development, evaluation, validation and/or implementation of new analytical methodologies
for the detection of microbial and parasitic pathogens associated with foodborne illnesses in meat,
poultry and egg products. Statistical analysis and writing skills necessary and appropriate for the
production of high quality scientific papers, publications and other documents concerning food safety
related issues of concern to the Agency.
- Note: Candidates must have received their doctoral degree within the last 3 years.
Promotion Potential
GS-13, future promotion depends on incumbent's demonstrated performance and ability to assume additional responsibility.
