If you don't quit drivin' that Hot Rod Lincoln
Well, you're heard the story of the hot rod race,
When the Ford and the Mercury were settin' the pace.
That story's true, I'm here to say,
Cause I was a' drivin' that Model A . . . .
We left San Pedro late one night
The moon and the starts were shinin' bright.
We drivin' up Grapevine Hill,
Passin' cars like they were standin' still.
Then, all of a sudden, in the wink of an eye,
A Cadillac sedan passed us by.
The remark was made, That's the car for me.
But, by then, the taillights was all you could see.
The only the thing I see ahead is
Just the heat a rising off the road
The rainbows I've been chasing keep on
Fading before I find my pot of gold
But more and more I'm thinking,
That the only treasures that I'll ever know
Are long ago and far behind and wrapped up in
My memories of home.
Yesterday I missed my exit
On my way to Sears
A song was on the radio
I hadn't heard in years
For a minute there the interstate
Was 2nd Avenue
And I was singing Everlasting Love
And driving home to you
Somewhere down that road not taken
Will forever live those dreams that were forsaken.
I sleep eighty miles an hour
To the whining of a diesel down the interstate

The easy chair that sits beside the fireplace
Then we shut her down in another town

I'm rollin' down the Interstate
On southbound 95
Dodging little four wheelers and trying to stay alive
They've been running in the hammer lane
And driving real slow
And they always cut in front of you
No matter where you go
They hit their brakes and slow you down and make you go around
And when you try to pass them they stomp the pedal down
They never use the blinker when they change into your lane.
It's enough to make an over the road driver go insane
There was a man on the road about an hour ago
And he was lookin' for a ride to New Mexico
But we was driving by way too fast to know . . .
Now my car broke down about an hour ago
And we were headed on down to New Mexico
But we did not see the gas was low.
I was riding down the highway
When I thought I spotted someone in the road
I said, You going my way?
And he turned his head and said, Man, I don't know.
So I asked about his government
And he turned his head and then began to laugh.
Well I asked him, what you running from?
And he said, My man, I'm running from my past.
Breaker breaker take me home
You know the one I wanna see
Gimme your northbound seven five
I been headed for the campin' town
Southbound is my ride
Eight more hours I'll be shiftin' gears.
I set out on a narrow way many years ago
Hoping I would find true love along the broken road
But I got lost a time or two
Wiped my brow and kept pushing through
I couldn't see how every sign pointed straight to you
Every long lost dream lead me to where you are
Others who broke my heart they were like northern stars

Riding on my bicycle
I saw a motorcrash
A proper motorcrash
Lots of spectators
I rushed to the center
Saw the injured parents
Cuts on the children
An awful motorcrash.
Monday, hard to wake up
Fill my coffee cup, I'm out the door

I'm running out of gas and out of time
Never gonna make it there by nine
