STATEMENT BY
HHS SECRETARY TOMMY G. THOMPSON
Regarding Director of Indian Health Service and Assistant Surgeon General
Michael H. Trujillo, M.D., M.P.H., M.S.

The past eight years have seen dramatic changes in the management, organization, and health programs of the Indian Health Service under the leadership of Dr. Michael Trujillo. During his tenure as director of the Indian Health Service, Dr. Trujillo has been a steady and strong advocate for Indian health programs and for tribal self-determination. He ushered in a new era of effective and meaningful tribal consultation and collaboration on many challenging issues. He brought about new collaborations to help bridge the health disparity gap. And he recognized the interconnectedness of health status with educational achievement, employment opportunities, and social and economic development, as well as access to health care.

As his fixed term as IHS director comes to an end, I want to thank him for his substantial contribution to furthering the shared federal and tribal goal of improving the health status and quality of life for Indian people nationwide. Dr. Trujillo's vision for America's health and security will continue to benefit all Americans as he takes on new challenges under the Office of the Surgeon General.
