STATEMENT BY HHS SECRETARY TOMMY G. THOMPSON
ON THE PRESIDENT'S INTENTION TO NOMINATE ELIAS A. ZERHOUNI, M.D.,
TO BE DIRECTOR OF THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH

President Bush announced today his intention to nominate Elias A. Zerhouni, M.D., to head the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Md.

The dawning of the 21st century brings with it an unprecedented convergence of science and technology. To lead the National Institutes of Health -- the preeminent scientific research institution in the world -- we need a leader who understands this convergence and who has experience creating the kind of research efforts and teams that pursue and find answers to some of the great medical mysteries we face today. This includes pursuit of a cure for cancer, fulfilling the promise of stem cell research, and discovering answers for some of the most disabling diseases -- such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and diabetes. Dr. Elias Zerhouni is that person.

Dr. Zerhouni brings to the position of director a reputation as an innovative leader at one of America's greatest medical schools, the Johns Hopkins University. In addition to his leadership, he is recognized in the medical establishment as an outstanding medical innovator and researcher, critical skills necessary to meet the research and scientific challenges of the 21st century.
Dr. Zerhouni has a track record of bringing together the best minds from across the medical spectrum and asking them to think beyond the existing bounds of knowledge. He works on the cutting edge of science and technology and inspires others to do the same.

He has a clear understanding of the relationship between science, academia and industry that will serve NIH and its institutes well. During his rapid rise at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Zerhouni demonstrated great skill at building consensus on difficult issues due to a strong understanding of human disease and clinical research. These skills, combined with an open and inquisitive mind, have helped Dr. Zerhouni develop an impressive record of achievement on some of the most difficult issues dealt with at Johns Hopkins Medical School. He is a proven manager, well prepared to lead NIH through a time of great expansion and challenge.

Dr. Zerhouni comes to the position of NIH director, ready to lead and I look forward to working with him as we ask and answer the most difficult scientific and medical questions facing our nation.
