OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH (DVAM) |

During October, state and
territorial domestic violence coalitions, corporations, health-care
providers, faith-based groups, and CDC will highlight activities
that increase awareness about intimate partner violence. |
|
Approximately 1.5 million
U.S. women and 835,000 U.S. men are raped or physically assaulted by
a current or former spouse, cohabitating partner, or date each year.1 |
|
The annual health-related
costs of intimate partner violence in the United States is
approximately $5.8 billion.2 |
|
|
|
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT DISPARITIES |

Nearly one-third of African
American women experience Intimate Partner
Violence (IPV) in their lifetimes
compared with one-fourth of white women.3 |
| |
According to the National
Violence Against Women Survey, American Indian/Alaska Native women
and men were most likely to report IPV, and Asian/Pacific Islander
women and men were least likely to report IPV. It is unclear
whether this difference is due to variations in willingness to
report information about violence or to variations in incidence of
IPV.3 |
