surveillance area: 72,386 births in 1995; 75,094 births in
1996; 75,563 births in 1997; and 77,940 births in 1998.
Children included in surveillance project: Children born in 1995 or
later.
Case definition: The standard FASSNet case definition.
Information sources: Birth defects registry, vital records,
genetics clinics, hospitals, hospital discharge dataset,
developmental disabilities program.
Information collected: The standard FASSNet set of
variables.
Prevalence rates: For birth years 1995-1997, the FAS prevalence is
0.3 per 1,000 live births.
Education and training activities for health-care and other providers:
Program staff train clinical and nonclinical
professionals to recognize FAS and provide appropriate referrals for
affected children and their families. Trainees include physicians, nurses,
early intervention professionals, and other allied health and social
services professionals.
Other FASSNet activities: We are preparing a web-based distance
learning project on FAS.

FAS-related state legislation or statutes: Arizona Revised
Statutes Title 36, Article 2: 36-133 "Chronic disease surveillance
system; confidentiality; immunity; violation; classification." This
statute authorizes the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) to perform
birth defects surveillance including the creation of a birth defects
registry. The Arizona FASSNet project agreement with ADHS designates our
project as the most appropriate to direct and coordinate Arizona's
surveillance activities for FAS.
Relation between FASSNet project and state birth defects
surveillance system: The FASSNet project is authorized by the state
birth defects surveillance program to conduct surveillance for FAS in
Arizona.
