National Preparedness Month

National Preparedness Month Web Banner

Join the Ready Campaign and our DHS partner Citizen Corps in September for the fifth annual National Preparedness Month (NPM)!

This year the focus of NPM is to encourage citizens to take important preparedness steps:

Public Television and National Preparedness
Public Television plays an important role in generating public awareness about preparedness. Many stations are already serving their communities by convening discussion, disseminating critical information, and reaching out to neglected populations. PTV and NPM are a natural fit.

National Preparedness Month FAQs

What is National Preparedness Month?

National preparedness is really about community preparedness - about how we can all pitch in at our schools, workplaces, libraries, homes, hospitals and town halls to ready our community for the unthinkable. NPM is a time when communities will come together to do just this. Public Television can play an important role here, and many stations are already serving their communities by convening discussion, disseminating critical information, and reaching out to neglected populations. PTV and NPM are a natural fit.

Who else is participating?

How has Public Television supported NPM in the past?

  • Public Television stations aired special preparedness programming from Fred Friendly Seminars, In The Balance
  • Public Television stations have created on-air and web campaigns, such as Connecticut Public Broadcasting's On Watch, Houston PBS's Our Community Prepares, and WIPB's local program When Disaster Strikes

How do I get involved?

The best resources to prepare and protect your community will be accessible through your Citizen Corps local council and APTS.

If you have questions about getting involved with National Preparedness Month, please contact Susan Swartz at 202.654.4204.

APTS Action Inc. has been hard at work on Capitol Hill, telling Congress about the ways that public television stations are serving critical homeland security roles across the nation.

If your station is engaged in a homeland security datacasting project, outreach campaign, communications strategy, or is playing another emergency preparedness role, let us know! Please contact Susan Swartz at 202.654.4204.
