Neutron Techniques
Crystallography The diffraction of neutrons from a crystalline sample
furnishes information about the structural arrangement of the atoms
that compose it.
Reflectometry   probes the nanoscale structure of surfaces and interfaces
Small Angle Neutron Scattering    is a powerful method for characterizing the nanoscale structure of solids, liquids, plastics, and macromolecules.
Spectroscopy  The energy scale of neutrons ( meV ) makes them ideal probes of the dynamics of materials.
Chemical Analysis  Several nuclear methods are used at the NCNR, including prompt-gamma neutron activation analysis, instrumental neutron activation analysis, and cold-neutron depth profiling
Other Methods  Neutron interferometry, neutron radiography, and fundamental physics using neutrons are active research areas at the NCNR

The Center For High Resolution Neutron Scattering (CHRNS), supported by the National Science Foundation and NIST, is an important component of the NCNR, providing users with access to six neutron scattering instruments.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS - NEW!
The next proposal deadline is November 3, 2008. Sucessful proposals will be allocated instrument time from January 2009 through August 2009. details

We have posted some proposal statistics summarizing the last five calls.

  
NCNR Expansion Initiative
A significant expansion of the NCNR is underway. The project comprises development of a new cold neutron moderator, and a new guide hall with five state-of-the-art instruments. A workshop was held on July 17-19, 2006.
  
Major Upgrade to SANS Analysis Software
With a new user interface and calculations up to 10x faster, this new release make fitting of complex models simpler and more accessible. details
  
Gardner named IOP Fellow
Jason Gardner of the NCNR and Indiana University has been appointed Fellow in the Institute of Physics, UK: “For his outstanding contributions to our understanding of the spin dynamics and magnetic order in complex magnetic systems by means of neutron scattering and contributions to the IOP journals.”
  
Flemming Award to Yildirim
NCNR staff member Taner Yildirim has won the Arthur S. Flemming Award for his research on superconductors and hydrogen storage materials. details
