BioPreferred is a Federal program that aims to increase the purchase and use of biobased products. Biobased products are made from biological or renewable agricultural materials like plant, animal, marine or forestry ingredients.

Examples of biobased products for commercial, industrial or consumer use include: building materials, lubricants, bioplastics, and cleaning products.

Designated Item of the Month: Plastic Insulating Foam
This "spray-in-place" plastic foam product manufactured from soy and other vegetable polyols provides a sealed thermal barrier when used in residential or commercial construction applications. This product is used to insulate walls and roofs, or to seal around doors, windows, and other gaps and cracks.

Items are generic groupings of biobased products. As of November 2008 there are more than 35 BioPreferred designated items that are eligible for preferred Federal purchasing.

Proposed and Final Regulations
New generic groupings of biobased products are added to the list of BioPreferred items through a federal rulemaking (i.e. regulatory) process. Click on the link above to view the most recent proposed regulation (Round 5 - Oct 2008) designating nine additional biobased items for federal procurement.
