The term seismic seiche was first coined by Anders Kvale in 1955, to describe oscillation of lake levels in Norway and England caused by the Assam earthquake of August, 1950.

5.0 This earthquake occurred only seconds before the explosion which began the eruption of Mount St. Helens volcano. This eruption and blast took 396 meters off the top of Mount St. Helens, killed 31 people, left 33 others missing and caused damage between $500 million and $2 billion U.S. dollars. Felt (V) at Yakima and (IV) in many parts of Washington and Oregon.
