The term seismic seiche was first coined by Anders Kvale in 1955, to describe oscillation of lake levels in Norway and England caused by the Assam earthquake of August, 1950.

1693	Sicily, Italy	7.5	This earthquake caused over 60,000 deaths and the total destruction of several villages and towns in the districts of Siracusa, Ragusa, and Catania. The earthquake was followed by a tsunami that struck the Ionian coasts of Sicily and the Messina Strait and was probably observed in the Aeolian Islands. One of the world's most destructive earthquakes.

1982	Luzon, Philippine Islands	7.4	Several people injured and some damage (VII RF) at Virac, Catanduanes. Felt (V RF) at Manila and Legaspi, Luzon and Catbalogan, Samar. Felt from Baguio, Luzon to Hinatuan, Mindanao.

1997	Michoacan, Mexico	7.1	One person killed and extensive damage in the Arteaga area, Michoacan. Felt strongly in much of Michoacan and at Mexico City. Also felt in the states of Colima, Guerrero and Jalisco.
