EPA Smart Growth
Smart Growth development has clear environmental benefits, including improved air and water quality, increased wetlands preservation, more brownfields sites cleaned and reused, and increased preservation of open spaces. There are also clear economic benefits, including employment and business opportunities, expansion of the local tax base, provision of neighborhood services and amenities, and the creation of economically competitive communities. U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
The US Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) economic development programs can stimulate economic development by leveraging private investment -- making brownfield projects feasible. These programs along with other federal resources and the Brownfields Tax Incentive can provide communities with the financial assistance necessary to return brownfields to productive uses.

HUD's Development Block Grant (CDBG) and Section 108 loan guarantee programs along with the Brownfields Economic Development Initiative (BEDI) are flexible sources of funding for brownfields redevelopment. US Department of Commerce - Economic Development Administration
For almost 35 years, EDA has supported the revitalization and reuse of idle and abandoned industrial land and facilities (now called brownfields), as a core component of its mission to aid the nation's most economically distressed communities.

EDA's "brick and mortar" programs, that provide funding to revitalize, upgrade, and expand physical infrastructure, are perhaps the most commonly utilized for brownfields redevelopment. Examples include historic building rehabilitation and reuse, water and sewer infrastructure enhancements, and construction of new publicly-owned facilities. In addition, EDA planning and technical assistance grants have been used for activities such as long-term redevelopment planning, market feasibility studies, geographic information system inventories of abandoned, idle, and underused properties, and economic assessments of brownfields parcels.
