Description

National Technical Information Service (NTIS) is the central source for the public sale of U.S. and foreign government-sponsored R&D and engineering reports, and other analyses prepared by federal and local government agencies. NTIS provides access to both completed and ongoing research. Containing over 2.0 million bibliographic records, the NTIS Database is the preeminent resource for accessing the latest research sponsored by the United States and select foreign governments. The Database represents billions of dollars in research. Contents include research reports, computer products, software, video cassettes, audio cassettes and more. The complete electronic file dates back to 1964. On average, NTIS has added over 60,000 new records per year to the Database over the past ten years. Most records include abstracts. The Bibliographic Database is updated twice monthly; available for lease; or available online from a number of commercial sources. Reports indexed in the NTIS Bibliographic Database can be ordered as paper copy or microfiche; datafiles, databases, and software on magnetic tape and diskette. The Federal Research in Progress (FEDRIP) Database provides access to ongoing federally funded research projects. FEDRIP is a compilation of input from nine government agencies. The areas of Health and Medicine are most prominent for input from the National Institutes of Health (40%), the Veterans Administration, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The FEDRIP Database is updated monthly and is available for lease from a number of commercial sources. The NTIS Web site contains the searchable NTIS Database from 1990 forward and can be access for free. Most records include abstracts for information products that can be ordered as download files, paper copy or microfiche; datafiles, databases, and software on magnetic tape and diskette. Since 1992, NTIS FedWorld Information Technologies has served as the online locator service for a comprehensive inventory of information disseminated by the federal government. FedWorld assists federal agencies and the public in electronically locating federal government information, both information housed within the NTIS repository and information FedWorld makes accessible through an electronic gateway to other government agencies. FedWorld is currently meeting the information needs of tens of thousands of customers daily. Examples of electronic information available on FedWorld include EPA auto emissions information, federal job searches, and Supreme Court Decisions. FedWorld maximizes the potential of the Internet and the World Wide Web by offering multiple distribution channels for government agencies to disseminate information.
