Through its Office of Employment Projections, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) develops 10 year projections of industry and occupational employment for use in career counseling and educational planning. Employment projections are developed every two years, using an econometric model of the economy in the target year and staffing patterns projected from BLS survey data. Projections for the 2000-10 period include approximately 35 health occupations and 8 health industry sectors.
Information based on employment projections for the 2000-10 period is published in the November 2001 Monthly Labor Review, Winter 2000-02 Occupational Outlook Quarterly, Occupational Projections and Training Data (Bulletin 2541), Occupational Outlook Handbook statements are also available in a set of reprints, some of which focus specifically on health occupations. These statements describes the nature of the work, education and training requirements, job outlook, and earnings in approximately 250 occupations including dentists, dental assistants, optometrists, physical therapists, radiologic technologists, and registered nurses.
