February 2004 Domestic Traffic Up 9.3 Percent From February 2003

Thursday, May 13, 2004 - The U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) today reported, in a release of preliminary data, that U.S. airlines carried 45.3 million domestic passengers in February, 9.3 percent more than in February 2003 (Table 1).
These passengers were carried on 746,025 flights, up 9.9 percent from the flights operated in February 2003.
In other domestic comparisons from February 2003 to February 2004:
Revenue passenger miles, a measure of the number of passengers and the distance flown, were up 13.3 percent.
Available seat-miles, a measure of airline capacity, were up 12.4 percent.
Load factor, a measure of how many seats are sold and used, was up 0.6 percentage points.
Flight stage length, the average non-stop distance, was up 3.4 percent.
Passenger trip length, the average distance passengers travel, was up 3.6 percent.
The number of domestic airline passengers rose 2.5 percent in February from January. (Table 2) Month-to-month comparisons may be affected by seasonal factors.
Among airlines, Delta Airlines carried 5.9 million domestic passengers in February, the most of any airline (Table 3).
Among airports, Hartsfield-Jackson International in Atlanta continued in February to be the busiest domestic airport, with 2.8 million passenger boardings (Table 4).
Note that there was one more day in February 2004 than in February 2003 due to Leap Year.
