About this Website

Webcontent.gov is a practical guide to help you manage your agency's website. Everything you need to know as a web content manager is here, including:

  • information about federal website requirements
  • guidance on how to fulfill OMB's web policies
  • common web content practices
  • staffing and governance issues
  • website design and usability
  • performance measures

Webcontent.gov is all about web managers helping one another by sharing experiences, common challenges, lessons learned, successes, and new ideas. By using Webcontent.gov, together we can make U.S. government websites the best in the world.

We launched Webcontent.gov in September 2004 and gave the site a new look and expanded content as part of a redesign in January 2006. We're continually expanding and improving the site, so feel free to contact us with any suggestions!

Who This Website Is For

Webcontent.gov is for government web managers everywhere. While U.S. federal web content managers are the primary audience, we also welcome web managers from state, local, and international governments to use the site and send us comments, ideas, and suggested resources.

Who Manages the Site

Webcontent.gov is managed by the Federal Web Managers Council, an inter-agency group of about 40 web managers from every cabinet-level agency and many independent agencies. We have representatives from both headquarters and field operations.

What We Do

The goal of the Federal Web Managers Council is to make U.S. government websites the most citizen-focused and visitor-friendly in the world. Besides managing this website, we organize workshops and develop resources and practical tools to help federal web managers. We also serve as the steering committee for the much larger Web Content Managers Forum, a group of about 700 government web managers across the country that meets monthly and communicates through a ListServ.

What You Can Do

If you are a government employee who is a web content manager at your agency, we hope you will join the Web Content Managers Forum. The Forum is a great way to stay informed about issues of interest to government web managers and receive updates about Webcontent.gov.

If you are a member of the Forum, and are interested in volunteering to work on one of the Advisory Council’s activities, please read our strategic plan and let us know how you’d like to help. Or feel free to contact us directly.
