Spirit has sighted possibly layered rock in hills just ahead, while twin Opportunity has extended its arm to pockmarked stones on a crater rim to gather clues of a watery past. More than a month after the completion of their primary mission, NASA's Mars Exploration Rovers are continuing to search for clues about past water on Mars. Spirit is now only about 400 meters from the 'Columbia Hills', which may provide insight both into how hills form on Mars and whether the ancient environment at this part of Mars was wet.
