WebEx Applications
On March 14, Barnett Rattner and Kevin Laurent presented a WebEx seminar entitled “Wildlife Toxicology Database and Web Portal Activities in the USGS and their Widespread Application” at the headquarters of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Silver Spring, Maryland.  This presentation was made at the request of Dr. Teri Rowles of the Marine Animal Health Program, and the seminar was well-attended.  NOAA is in the process of developing databases to summarize their monitoring and ecotoxicological data, and hopes to use USGS databases as a model for their activities.

Judging at State and International Science & Engineering Fairs
Dr. J. Michael Meyers of Patuxent Wildlife Research Center will participant as a Tier II judge for botany, zoology, or environment sciences at the upcoming Georgia State Science & Engineering Fair, 3-5 April 2008 in Athens, GA.  The fair expects to have a record number of more than 500 participants this year in its new location at the Classic City Center.  Judging will take place on 4 April beginning at 10 AM and will continue into the night.  Dr. Meyers has more than 10 years of judging experience at the state fair, which awards more than $64,000 in scholarships annually.  On 13-14 May, he will participate as a Grand Awards Judge for the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair in Atlanta, which expects to host more than 1,500 students from all 50 states and 45 counties.  Students will compete for more than $4 million in scholarships, internships, and awards.   The most enjoyable part of judging is seeing a young scientist develop his or her skills and knowledge during the 7 years that they participate.  It's also rewarding to see students you judged in the past compete successfully at the international level.
