Daily HealthBeat Tip

Drinking and schooling

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I'm Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

Getting drunk isn't just something college students do.

A study says young adults who are not in college, especially men, have similar rates of potentially hazardous drinking as college students. In general, those with a high school education drank more heavily in 12th grade and maintained the habit into adulthood. College graduates drank less in high school but caught up during college.

Ray Bingham of the University of Michigan says the results show a change is needed to prevent at-risk drinking.

"It needs to be in terms of giving more attention to people who go into the military or trade school or work in factories, and not just people who go to college." (11 seconds)

The study in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
