The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO), built 6800 feet under ground in a mine near in Ontario, is a heavy-water Cherenkov detector designed to detect neutrinos produced by fusion reactions in the sun. It's run by a team of scientists from Canada, the United States, and Britain. SNO measures the flux, energy, and direction of electron-neutrinos produced in the sun. The observatory may also detect other types of neutrinos (muon-neutrinos and tau-neutrinos) which could significantly alter our present understanding of neutrinos, the sun, and the evolution of the entire Universe.
