175 Years of Thai-U.S. Friendship Played Out on the Courts NEW
July 2008 marks the 175th Anniversary of Thai-U.S. friendship. To celebrate, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) partnered with the U.S. Embassy in Thailand, the NBA, and the WNBA to host the Friendship Basketball Camp. From July 7-10, Pat Garrity of the Orlando Magic and Kym Hampton, formerly of the New York Liberty, led clinics for 100 Thai boys and girls and 20 American international students between the ages of 13-15. Diplomacy Bank Shot, Iranian National Basketball Team Prepares for Olympics in U.S. NEW
The State Department’s Office of Sports Initiatives in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the NBA, brought a 25-member delegation of the Iranian National Basketball team to Salt Lake City, Utah for a series of exhibition games. The Olympic bound team spent a little over a week in the U.S. participating in the Rocky Mountain Revue tournament. Read More

SportsUnited Friendship Basketball in Jeddah
In an act of progressive public diplomacy, SportsUnited – an initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs – conducted its first Sports Envoy program in Saudi Arabia, July 7-11, 2007. In partnership with the National Basketball Players’ Association (NBPA), Friends of Jeddah Parks and Jeddah United Sports Club; four former NBA and WNBA players – Kermit Washington, Purvis Short, Lynette Woodard and Ruthie Bolton – conducted clinics and competitions for male and female basketball players and coaches in Jeddah, a city on the western coast of the country. Warm Welcome Changes the Minds Of Tunisian Basketball Players
The Office of Sports Initiatives (SportsUnited) in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs held its first visitor program with Tunisia. SportsUnited welcomed the visitors to the U.S. for a ten-day stay (June 15 to June 25, 2008) in the Washington, D.C. area. The youth basketball players and coaches were from the Tunisian Basketball Junior National Federation. The group of twelve players – six boys, six girls – and their three coaches crisscrossed D.C. experiencing many different sides of American life and athletics. Read More |

Afghan Youth Score Points in Basketball Program
The Afghan Sports Visitors Program, a Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs’ SportsUnited Program, brought seven Afghan girls ages 14-19, four female coaches, and one male coach to the U.S. for a two-week program. The program introduced the delegation to sports in America through basketball. They observed every level of the sport, from junior varsity high school to the NBA, and learned about American life in Washington D.C., Delaware, and Philadelphia.

Lebanese Teens’ Dreams Come True as Everlasting Bonds Are Formed During U.S. Visit
The U.S. Department of State’s Sports Diplomacy program hosted a group of 12 Lebanese teens, six girls and six boys, in a two-week program in the U.S. These teens, along with two coaches, came from various townships in Lebanon with different religious, economic and social backgrounds. During their first week in the United States, the teen’s traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada observing two U.S. Olympic Qualifying Men’s Basketball games. Read More |

Partnership National Basketball Association (NBA) legends player Sam Perkins and Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) players Andrea Stinson and Shameka Christon will conduct basketball clinics in Algeria, November 9-12, as sports envoys for the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). These clinics, for boys and girls ages 7-17, will include technique drills and team building activities, as well as providing an opportunity for the youth to engage in dialogue with the American players. Partnership through Basketball Benefits Russian and American Youth The National Basketball Association (NBA) coordinated the visit of a delegation of coaches and general managers to Moscow, Russia, May 6-9, 2005, for the European Final Four basketball tournament. At the request of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and our post in Russia, the NBA worked with the embassy to conduct a basketball clinic for Russian and American youth. Public-Private Partnerships Benefit Filipino Youth With funding from the ECA International Sports Initiative open grant competition, the Detlef Schrempf Foundation concluded a highly successful sports exchange with the Philippines, demonstrating how effective public-private partnership can expand the impact of an ECA Office of Citizen Exchanges program. Former NBA star Detlef Schrempf and nine other Americans returned from a two-week stay in the Philippines where they conducted basketball clinics for coaches and two two-day camps for boys and girls, ages seven to eighteen.
