Lazarus Creek and Del Clark Dedication

Lazarus Creek flood control project in Minnesota

Lazarus Creek flood control project in Minnesota

The recent Lazarus Creek dedication marked the completion of the Lazarus Creek flood control and Del Clark projects. For the NRCS Minnesota State office and area office in Marshall, Minnesota, the project dedication meant the culmination of a lot of hard work over the last several years to make these projects become reality.  Lazarus Creek, a tributary to the Lac qui Parle River in Yellow Medicine County of western Minnesota, drains to the Minnesota River and is the site of the Lazarus Creek Floodwater Control Project. The purpose of this project was to control runoff from a 21 square mile drainage area west of Canby, Minnesota. The project consisted of an earthen dam with a maximum height of 62 feet and 1,350 feet in length. A two-

stage outlet works comprised of a 48-inch reinforced concrete pipe on channel grade and a concrete weir inlet located 40 feet above the pipe and a vegetated, earthen emergency spillway to prevent dam overtopping. The “dry dam” stores approximately 1,950 acre-feet of runoff from any 100-year storm event.

The Del Clark Lake project was the result of a partnership effort between the Lac qui Parle -- Yellow Bank Watershed District and NRCS to provide facilities for people with disabilities access to the lake for fishing.
