Federal Funds Authorized To Help Fight Nevada Wildfire

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- FEMA made federal funds available on July 3 to help Nevada battle a wildfire near Carson City.
The wildfire, designated the "Mira Loma" fire, broke out on 5,000 acres and at its height, threatened 100 homes in Lockwood, Nev. and 300-350 homes in Highlands, Nev. Local officials indicated voluntary evacuations were in effect over the weekend.
The fire was reported contained by Sunday, July 4. At least two structures were lost to before the fire was contained.
Under the fire suppression authorization, FEMA will pay 70 percent of the state's eligible firefighting costs once the state's floor cost has been met. The floor cost is derived through a formula based on the state's five-year annual average cost for fighting fires.
Federal fire suppression aid is provided through the President's Disaster Relief Fund and made available by FEMA to assist in fighting fires when they threaten to cause a major disaster.
Eligible state firefighting costs covered by the aid can include expenses for field camps; equipment use, repair and replacement; tools, materials and supplies; and mobilization and demobilization activities.
