ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Florida Long-Term Recovery Office (LTRO) of the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency has contracted with Spherion, a staffing and recruitment company, to hire 500 employees in Central Florida over the next 5 days.

“While we continue working toward our mission of assisting Florida in its recovery from the six hurricanes that have impacted the state in the last year, we – like the rest of the federal government and the American people – are doing our best to help the nation respond to Katrina’s unprecedented challenge,” said Scott L. Morris, Director of FEMA’s Florida Long-Term Recovery Office. “A well-staffed call center will strengthen FEMA’s ability to respond quickly to the pressing needs of the millions of people affected by Katrina.”

Four hundred of the positions are for expansion of a 150-person call center, which the LTRO activated late last week to handle inquiries from Hurricane Katrina victims. Another hundred positions will staff the LTRO in areas ranging from administrative support and data entry to logistics and IT.

“Placing 500 applicants in 5 days will be a challenge, but the reward of supporting our nation in this time of great need is well worth it,” said Tim Gorman, Group Vice President for Staffing Services for Spherion. “Not only will we put our company's existing network to use, but we will work at the grassroots level to meet this ambitious goal.”

Information about available positions will be posted on the company's Web site, and linked to several popular job sites, including Monster.com, careerbuilder.com, and hotjobs.com. Recruiters will also network with community, volunteer, and faith-based organizations to reach out to potential applicants, including evacuees who find themselves looking for work in Florida.

Applicants can set up interviews by calling toll-free 1-800-549-8414 or visiting www.spherionandFEMA.com. The phone line and website will be active beginning Tuesday night.
