COSMO-SkyMed 1 / Delta II 7420-10

COSMO-SkyMed-1 is a remote sensing/imaging Geosynchronous class spacecraft, built by Thales Alenia Space Italia, for the Italian Government. COSMO is the acronym for Constellation of Small Satellites for Mediterranean basin Observation. COSMO-SkyMed 1 is the first in this constellation for an end-to-end Earth Observation Dual Use (civil and military) system. Eventually to be composed of a constellation of four satellites and ground stations, the COSMO-SkyMed System will take radar imagery of the Earth using a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) instrument in response to a variety of institutional (including Defense and Civil) and commercial users. The satellites will have an operational in-orbit service of at least 5 years.
