US-VISIT: Privacy Information

US-VISIT » Privacy Information

The Department of Homeland Security safeguards the biometric and biographic information provided by visitors and ensures that their privacy interests are not violated.

  • US-VISIT records will be protected in a manner consistent with all applicable privacy laws and regulations.
  • Personal information will be kept secure and confidential and will not be discussed with or disclosed to any person within or outside the US-VISIT Program other than as authorized by law and as required for the performance of official duties.
  • Careful safeguards, including appropriate security controls, will ensure that the data are not used or accessed improperly.

US-VISIT Privacy Office Mission Statement

We uphold the privacy of individuals while protecting our national borders. We do this by adhering to letter and spirit of privacy law and complying with fair information practices, by treating individuals and their personal information with respect and by ensuring a high standard of privacy protection.

Redress Policy As part of the US-VISIT Privacy element, individuals are encouraged to contact our office through the redress process, which is used to notify US-VISIT about data errors and other problems that need to be corrected.

US-VISIT Privacy Impact Assessments

A Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA), like a System of Records Notice (SORN), is an evaluation of actual or potential impacts—including social and ethical—that an information system may have on privacy and the ways in which any adverse impacts may be mitigated.  It is necessary to perform a PIA for new or substantially modified information systems that handle personal information.
