Scientists are particularly interested in Saturn's moon Titan because it's one of the few known moons with its own dense atmosphere. Titan's atmosphere is also thought to be very similar to what Earth's atmosphere was a long time ago. By learning about Titan, we'll learn about our own planet.

Earth's Safe Zone Became Hot During Legendary Solar Storms

A NASA-funded study found a region between radiation belts surrounding the Earth is not as benign as once thought. Observations have revealed that the Van Allen Radiation Belt Slot, often considered a safe zone, filled with concentrated radiation during the solar storms of October and November 2003. The storms generated powerful electric fields that forced much of the plasmasphere into interplanetary space. It was eroded to an unprecedented degree, to the point below the safe zone. Since the plasmasphere was below the safe zone, an intense radiation belt powered by the solar storms formed in the region.

The Solar, Anomalous and Magnetospheric Particle Explorer (SAMPEX) satellite observed the formation of the new belt in the safe zone on October 31, 2003; and NASA's Imager for Aurora to Magnetopause Global Exploration (IMAGE) satellite observed the loss of the plasmasphere during the solar storms.

Determining the Sun's influence on our planet is vital for understanding life on Earth. Solar radiation can adversely affect technology and space missions on and near Earth. Even short term changes in the amount of solar energy that the Earth is exposed to can damage microelectronics aboard satellites and have harmful consequences for astronauts. Radiation bursts from the Sun can disrupt living tissues, potentially causing a number of complications for humans in space. More intense solar storms can affect the Earth's surface, even through the protective magnetosphere.

The connections between the Sun, Earth and life can tell us a great deal about the potential for life on Earth-like planets outside of our solar system. The Sun's behavior can also affect environmental changes on our planet. Finally, knowing how astronauts respond to the effects of solar radiation in space is especially important for making spaceflight safe for today's missions as well as future missions to distant locations like Mars.
