Madhavan, Adam Jacoff and Elena Messina Special Issue Description The
papers in this special issue are extended versions of papers with additional
results and analysis selected from the fourth IEEE International
Workshop on Safety, Security, and Rescue Robotics (SSRR) and the
sixth Performance Metrics for Intelligent Systems (PerMIS) Workshop
held in August 2006 at NIST. The papers were selected based on the comments
of reviewers and program committee members (during the workshop review
process) on the suitability of the paper for the special issue. The
selection criteria also included the emphasis of the papers on field
testing and quantitative performance evaluation of reported systems.
Out of the total eighty three submissions to PerMIS06 (37 papers)
and SSRR06 (39 papers and 7 posters), thirteen papers were short-listed
for consideration. These submissions were then rigorously reviewed for
originality, relevance, and significance by at least three reviewers.
The eight papers that were eventually accepted for this special issue
emphasize objective performance testing and evaluation of robotic and
intelligent systems to satisfy user-defined requirements on field applications.
The accepted papers can be broadly thought of as being representative
of the breadth of concerns in pertaining to evaluation of performance,
spanning developmental and operational systems, holistic systems and
individual components, and covering a wide range of application domains. Table of Contents
