This earthquake was felt strongly along the French Broad River between Asheville, North Carolina, and Newport, Tennessee. At Newport (Cocke County), bricks were shaken from some buildings and plaster cracked. Three frame houses under construction northeast of Newport at Johnson City were shaken down; one building under construction north of Newport at Morristown was damaged; and the top of one chimney at Greeneville, east of Morristown, was thrown down. Minor damage also occurred at Asheville, Bryson City, and Waynesville, North Carolina. Also felt in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Virginia.
