Annual Aerosol Update

The aerosol community at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), Greenbelt MD, and the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), New York, held their 2006 Annual Aerosol Update on February 10, 2006 at GSFC. This annual event, which was started about 4 years ago at the initiative of the Chief of the Sun-Earth Division, Dr. Franco Einaudi, during the formation of several cross-cutting research themes here at Goddard, features a number of presentations summarizing important research work in aerosol science conducted by Goddard research teams or collaborative research led by Goddard civil servants and contractor scientists. Understanding the Moon
February 7, 2006
Dr. Paul Lowman of the Planetary Geodynamics Laboratory has given a series of lectures entitled “Lunar Geology for Engineers and Scientists” at Goddard. The five lectures covered: Field trip to the Moon: Geology of the Imbrium Basin; Chemistry and Mineralogy of the Moon; Petrology of the Moon; Lunar Volcanism; and The Lunar Environment. Dr. Lowman talked about the chemical composition of moon rocks, regolith, mechanism of formation of lunar craters, and temperature variations. Dr. Lowman showed results from early Apollo missions as well as those from more recent missions such as Clementine. Full Story

Upcoming Meetings for Cloud Physics & Atmospheric Radiation Communities
February 1, 2006
The 12th Conference on Cloud Physics, sponsored by the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and organized by the AMS Committee on Cloud Physics, will be held 10–14 July 2006 jointly with the 12th Conference on Atmospheric Radiation, at the Monona Terrace Conference Center in Madison, WI. Abstracts are due Feb 15, 2006, and can be submitted online at the AMS Website. At the same time and place, the International Radiation Commission (IRC) of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (IAMAS) will also hold its annual business meeting, and Robert Cahalan will report on progress of I3RC and related activities in 3-Dimensional Radiative Transfer (3DRT), as Chair of IRC's 3DRT Working Group.
