Qian honored with Ronald L. Brodzinski Award for Early Career Exceptional Achievement

Congratulations to Weijun Qian on receiving the Ronald L. Brodzinski Award for Early Career Exceptional Achievement September 21, 2007, from Acting Laboratory Director Mike Kluse. The award, which was established in memory of Laboratory Fellow Ron Brodzinski, recognizes outstanding published scientific contributions by individuals near the beginning of their professional careers.

Weijun, who was nominated by Battelle Fellow Dick Smith, was honored for his “contributions towards the development and application of innovative techniques that have enabled large-scale quantitative investigations of proteins in challenging eukaryotic and human clinical samples." His current research involves developing and applying novel mass spectrometry-based proteomics approaches for quantifying the dynamic changes in protein abundances and protein post-translational modifications from mammalian cells, tissues, and biofluids. This work is helping the scientific community gain a better understanding of cell signaling and discovering novel mechanistic or diagnostic protein biomarkers for human diseases.

Weijun is part of a team that made the first global identification of endogenous levels of nitrate proteins in the brain, and he is technical lead for a number of proteomics technology development and collaborative application projects. In addition, he is currently leading a large-scale collaborative National Institutes of Health Glue Grant entitled Inflammation and the Host Response to Injury.

According to Dick in his nomination letter, “The breadth of (Weijun’s) research—involving analytical chemistry, clinical chemistry, and statistics—along with the innovation of his scientific accomplishments and the recognition they have received in the scientific community has significantly contributed to the Laboratory’s world-class proteomics capability, its reputation as a leader in this rapidly advancing field, and the growing size of PNNL’s proteomics research program.
