Environmental Research Letters (ERL) Outstanding Article of the Year Award

The first Environmental Research Letters Outstanding Article of the Year Award is presented to Ilan Koren, Yoram J. Kaufman, Richard Washington, Martin C Todd, Yinon Rudich, J. Vanderlei Martins and Daniel Rosenfeld for the article “The Bodélé depression: a single spot in the Sahara that provides most of the mineral dust to the Amazon forest”. Full Story

A-Train Aerosols and Cloud Symposium

GSFC was well represented at the A-Train Aerosols and Cloud Symposium held in the free air of Lille, in northern France, October 22-25. An impressive amount of advanced research with the new CALIPSO and CloudSat data has already been performed, as was reported during 3.5 days filled with oral and poster presentation. The participants also discussed numerous efforts to combine Aura, Aqua, and Terra satellite data with models, on regional to global scales. Among the invited speakers were Steven Platnick, who explained the new MODIS multi-layer cloud detection algorithm, Lorraine Remer and Ralph Kahn, who reported on recent aerosol science projects, focusing on MODIS and MISR, respectively, and Mian Chin, who covered ways of connecting a range of satellite data with aerosol transport models. Other participants included Charles Ichoku, Michael King, Rob Levy, and Alexander Marshak. A good (and stimulating) time was had by all. Full Story

IRS-2008 Site Visit and GEWEX Radiation Panel Meeting in Brazil

Robert Cahalan joined Teruyuki Nakajima (University of Tokyo) to visit Iguacu Falls, Brazil, during October 5-7, to prepare for the International Radiation Symposium (IRS-2008) that will take place there in August 2008. IRS is a quadrennial meeting sponsored by the International Radiation Commission (IRC, a commission of IUGG/IAMAS), for which Drs. Cahalan and Nakajima are acting as Vice President and President, respectively. Members of the Brazilian Local Organizing Committee, chaired by Marcia Yamasoe (Sao Paolo University), met with Drs. Cahalan and Nakajima to firm up the logistics and schedule for the IRS-2008. Full Story

2007 Laboratory for Atmospheres Peer Awards

The 2007 Laboratory for Atmospheres Peer and Contractor Awards ceremony was held on Thursday, September 27. The following Climate & Radiation Branch members were recognized: Scientific Recognition: Eric Wilcox (NASA); General Recognition: Warren Wiscombe (NASA); Science Leadership: Charles Ichoku (ESSIC); Science Research: Myeong-Jae Jeong (ESSIC); Education and Outreach: Kyu-Myong Kim (GEST); Administrative Support: Cathy Newman (SSAI).
