ARCTAS Field Experiment
July 7, 2008
The final phase of the ARCTAS (Arctic Research of the Composition of the Troposphere from Aircraft and Satellites) will take place from June 27 to July 12 in Canada. The goal of this deployment is to characterize smoke emissions from boreal forest biomass burning. Two aircraft, the NASA DC8 and the P3B are based in Cold Lake, Alberta. A third aircraft, the NASA B200 is based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Branch members Ralph Kahn, Allen Chu, Charles Ichoku and Lorraine Remer will be participating either as members of the forecasting team or as part of the P3B science team. The Arctic is undergoing significant environmental changes related to global climate change. Now, NASA is extensively studying the role of air pollution in this climate-sensitive region as part of the ARCTAS field campaign, the largest airborne experiment ever to do so.
