Earth Scientists' input to the Interagency Working Group on Earth Observations
June 15, 2004
IWGEO, the Interagency Working Group on Earth Observations, see http://iwgeo.ssc.nasa.gov/, is preparing a 10 year plan for US observations, which will provide a basis for discussions in the international GEO, Group on Earth Observations, scheduled to meet in Brussels in February 2005. As part of this ongoing activity, on June 16-17, non-government Earth scientists met with government representatives at USGS in Reston, VA, to provide input to the government about ongoing planning activities of the IWGEO. Several focus areas were discussed, including disasters, ocean resources, climate change, agriculture, health, ecology, and water resources. R. Cahalan of NASA and the CCSP, and Howard Diamond of NOAA are the government co-leads on climate change. Chris Justice of UMD, and Kevin Trenberth of NCAR co-led a Q/A and discussion session on climate. See IWGEO.
