New at DHS

Campaign aims to curb teen drinking through research about peers
A new campaign that highlights the difference between reality and perception about teen drinking is being launched in communities throughout Minnesota. The research based-campaign, called Most of Us®, is funded by the Minnesota Department of Human Services. More information is available in a news release.


Health reform information available on new Web site
A newly launched Web site — www.health.state.mn.us/healthreform — provides information on Minnesota's 2008 health care reform initiative. The site, created by the Minnesota Department of Health, has background on key components of the reform package signed into law by Gov. Tim Pawlenty in May. They include a Statewide Health Improvement Program, health care homes, payment reform and quality improvement, e-health measures and provisions to increase access to health care insurance and affordability. More information is in a health reform fact sheet and an implementation timeline prepared by the Minnesota House of Representatives Research Department.


DHS Twin Cities drug trends report released
Opiate-related admissions to Twin Cities addiction treatment programs increased in 2007, particularly for opiates other than heroin, including prescription narcotics, according to a report on drug abuse trends released by DHS. More information is in a news release.


Two tribal nations to provide full array of child welfare services
Authority and responsibility for responding to reports of child abuse and neglect have been transferred from neighboring counties to the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and the White Earth Band of Ojibwe. Under terms of recently signed agreements, the tribes will provide a full continuum of services that conform to tribal customs and traditions. More information is in a news release.


Department of Human Services identifies priorities
The Minnesota Department of Human Services has identified six priorities on the following topics: at-risk adults; at-risk children; reducing disparities; health care; chemical and mental health; and home and community-based services. The priorities will guide department planning efforts for the next two years. A summary sheet and overview of strategies are available.
