Periodic Data Quality Report
Using the Data Quality Report
The Periodic Summary of Record Volume and Data
Quality report is generated each time a transaction file is sent to CDC
either monthly or quarterly. This report is divided into three major
sections: Record Volume Update, Summary, and Data Quality and contains
statistics for data quality indicators developed by CDC for the purpose of
evaluating the data quality at the contributor level.
- The Record Volume Update section can be reviewed to ensure that the
number of records submitted to CDC for analysis is appropriate and
consistent with previous transaction records submitted on either a monthly
or quarterly basis and the number of records rejected were acceptable.
- The Summary and Data Quality sections include statistics related to data
completeness and data quality.
- Data completeness is measured by the percent of records with missing
data.
- Data quality is evaluated using the following indicators:
- Mis-codes are unacceptable data or codes for a field
- Biologically implausible values (BIVs) are data values beyond what is
considered a biologically plausible range
- Cross-check errors identify inconsistency in the data between specific
fields
- Unusual data distributions identify a higher or lower than expected
proportion of the population with a given response or data measurement
- Low and high standard deviations identify a higher or lower than
expected variability in a data measurement or data field, and
- For the PNSS only, the completion code and record linkage errors
identify records that contain incorrect, insufficient, or duplicate data
based on the assigned completion code.
Understanding the Record Volume and Data Quality Indicators and Edits
Each time a transaction file is received by CDC from a contributor, the
Periodic Summary of Record Volume and Data Quality report and a cover
letter are generated and sent electronically back to the contributor. The
cover letter states the date the transaction file was received at CDC, the
number of records the file contains, the months and year that a majority
of the data represents and the name of the contributor that sent the file.
The letter also indicates the file name that CDC assigned to the
transaction file. The Periodic Summary of Record Volume and Data Quality
report has three sections: Record Volume Update, Summary, and Data
Quality, that are discussed in detail in the following sections.
