Fire Weather Information

The NWS Western Region will implement new fire weather web pages on Thursday, August 28. On that date, the link from the "Fire Weather" selection on the left hand side of our main forecast page will switch to http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/firewx/main.php and bookmarks for fire weather information from our office will change. The page is already available for you to navigate and familiarize yourself with. Feel free to make new bookmarks as needed, especially for our local NWS office page which will be relocated to http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/firewx/?wfo=hnx, which is easily accessed from the main regional page by clicking on the map. The new pages are the result of several regional and national fire weather user surveys and many suggestions from users who tested early versions of the pages. The pages include the following important changes:
  • All Red Flag Warning and Fire Weather Watch products in effect across Western Region are displayed on the main regional map.
  • Spot forecast requests can be made from the main regional page by typing in the lat/lon of the fire or by selecting from the office pop up list on the left hand menu when the Spot (FWS) is moused over.
  • Similarly, any local NWS office can be accessed by clicking the map or from using the left hand "Forecasts" menu.
  • Red Flag Warning and Fire Weather Watch products can also be directly accessed from the left hand menu under "Current Hazards".
  • There are direct links to weather data in GIS format, GACCs and national fire information.
  • All local office fire weather pages are now nearly identical in layout. The spot forecast request link is always the first tab on the left in red above the map on all local office pages.
  • Direct web interfaces for everything from the Fire Weather Planning Forecast to digital data are available across the top of the local map.
  • Additional local information is available from the drop down menus under the tabs. Clicking the tabs will make the drop down menus static, if you prefer.
There are additional options from both the main regional page and our local page. It is important that you become familiar with the pages by August 21. We hope that the new fire weather pages provide you with better accessibility, uniformity and ease of use. Please let us know if you have any questions or comments. Please note that you can provide comments and suggestions from the main regional page by clicking on the e-mail link under "Top News".
