A small sample of the 1792 Ellicott/L'Enfant Map for the City of Washington from the Historical Map & Chart CollectionHistorical Map and Chart Collection In 1995, The Office of Coast Survey began scanning its historical map and chart collection. CGTP provides the technical expertise and assistance to scan these fragile documents, process them into formats usable by the general public for research and educational uses, and disseminates them through the Internet for the Coast Survey. Coastal Map and Charted Vector Shoreline In 2001, the Coast Survey Development Laboratory developed techniques and software to create digital, geo-referenced coastal maps, extract shoreline, and extract low water lines from large scale nautical charts. The coastal map and vector shoreline projects target nautical charts with scales ranging between 1:10,000 and 1:80,000. These two products are geared toward GIS users who would like to utilize nautical charts without the "clutter" of navigational aids and would like more accurate shoreline information. NOS Mapfinder Cooperative ProjectThe NOS Mapfinder gives direct Internet access to primary NOS imagery and data holdings for coastal photography, nautical charts, coastal survey maps, environmental sensitivity index maps, hydrographic surveys, water level stations, estuarine bathymetry, geodetic control points and the Historical Map and Chart Collection. By employing a geographic driven search engine, the user can now obtain selections from the image databases without the hassle of a text-only search. CGTP has produced two themes for the MapFinder project; the Historical Map and Chart Collection and Nautical Charts. For NOS Mapfinder home - Click Here
