The third building from the left, the Bioproducts, Sciences, and Engineering Laboratory, or BSEL, is nearly complete. PNNL scientists are now moving into the facility. BSEL is a joint effort between Washington State University and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Slideshow

Bill Riemath, of Energy and Environment, looks through lab supplies in one of the research laboratories at the Bioproducts, Sciences, and Engineering Laboratory (BSEL). Bill helps coordinate the moves of PNNL's biomass researchers from the main PNNL campus to BSEL, which is located on the campus of Washington State University Tri-Cities. PNNL began moving equipment into BSEL in late March and will continue moving equipment and employees through mid-May.

A BSEL dedication ceremony will be held on May 8. Speakers will include Mike Kluse, Mike Weis of PNSO, Andy Karsner, assistant secretary of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, and Vicky Carwein, chancellor of WSU Tri-Cities.

Background

The Bioproducts, Sciences, and Engineering Laboratory is a $24 million joint effort between Washington State University and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. It is a facility, to be located on the Tri-Cities campus, in which researchers would turn agriculture waste into viable products, like plastics, solvents and fibers. BSEL would provide badly needed educational space for WSU students and an opportunity for researchers and faculty to collaborate on projects. Governor Chris Gregoire added $13.1 million in her capital budget to fund construction of BSEL. Construction began in May with completion and occupancy expected in 2007.
